•VICTORIAN NURSES.
LADY ABERDEEN'S SCHEME FOR
THE DIAMOND JUBILEE;
An Order of Trained Nurses—lifer Ideas
Taking Practical Shape -+Details of the
.Proposal .
Ottawa, Ont., March 20. -The mope -
sal by the Countess of Aberdeen for com-
memorating the diamond jubilee ' of the
Queen by founding the Victorian Order
of Nurses is taking practical form. A
meeting was held in the Governor -Gen -
oral's office to -day, and his Excellency,
as patron of the fund, occupied the chair.
] Xe made a brief statoinent, pointing out
that a thiswas the only proposal having a
national cliaracter,and scope. It would
not in any sense interfere with the pro-
posals. of those who intended. to celebrate
the diamond jubilee by ceremonials or
memorials for the different provinces,
cities, or localities. He then called for a
statement by the president of the fund,
the Countess of Aberdeen. Her Excellency
said that the schema as first outlined had
been somewhat modified. In deference to
a general expression of opinion the name
of the nurses would be changed from
home helpers to the Victorian Order of
Nurses. On the recoinmendation of the
committee of eminent physicians in
Montreal, tho scheme would include the
using of the existing training hospitals,
and the acceptance of the services of
thoroughly trained nurses who might be
willing to join tho order. Before the
order was duly Constituted the advice of
the leading medical authorities would be
followed in deciding upon the standard
of attainment that would .be required
from the nurses, the length of the train-
ing period, and the nature of the exam-
ination which they would be required to
pass. Her Excellency said she had re-
ceived gratifying letters of endorsement
from thoughtful and representative peo-
ple all over Canada. Sonia 500 letters
had already been sent out in connection
with this matter. The provisional com-
mittee is intended only to take steps
necessary for the raising of the funds and
for giving general information to the
public. After the fund is raised a general
meeting of all the vice -patrons and vice-
presidents will be called. The .vice -patrons
and vice-presidents of the fund are:
Members of the Privy Council, arch-
bishops and bishops, members of the Pro-
vincial Governments, judges, Senators,
members of Parliament, presidents and
directors of the colleges of physicians and
surgeons and medical associations; mem-
bers of Provincial Boards of Health, re-
presentative professors in colleges, repro-
sentative clergymen of all denominations,
together with the wives of such of these
gentlemen as are married, and presidents
of local Councils of Women. It will be
left to them to appbint a committee, to
which the fund'shail be transferred and
by which the details of the organization
and the management of the fund and
order will be settled. It has also 'been.
suggested that the scheme should be ex-
tended to cities where the =supplied
need for trained nurses is still great
Tho honorary secretary was called upon
for a statement. ,H,0 briefly outlined the
needs particularly for Manitoba and the
Northwest Territories, and said that an
order of Viotorian muses could give the
physicians there valuable aid, and would
give needed help where doctors could not
be obtained. The existing training hos-
pitals could be uscal, and cottage homes
for the residences of the nurses in the
country could also bo used as emergency
hospitals. By co-operating with existing
hospitals at five or six centers, and by
the founding of six or eight cottage
homes for nurses, subordinate and tribu-
tary to the hospitals of each of these
training centers, the whole of llianitoba
and the Northwest Territories could be
covered. Tho nurses would then bo able
to reach their patients without loss of
time or much expense..Each of these cot
ages homes would cost about a thousand
dollars. These homes alight be named
after those who gave $1,000 each. The
wealthy donors who would give larger
stuns might have their names commem-
orated in the training hospitals.
A statement was made by the honor-
ary treasurer, Mrs. Edward Griffin, that
already several subscriptions had been
received, also that applications had been
received from ladies to be accepted as
inembors of the order.
Among other matters considered by the
committee was the question of how the
scheme should bo announced, so as to
inform everybody correctly of its nature.
It Wats decided that a pamphlet should
bo issued, and that a synopsis of this
should be prepared for the press. Local
committees aro to be formed in different
parts of Canada to give information in
regard to the movement, and also to bo -
come channels through which the funds
will be collected.
Valuable suggestions were contributed
by Dr. S. E. Dawson, Queen's Printer;
r. Bourino$, clerk'of the House of bom-
ions; his Lordship the Bishop of Otte -
a, Mrs. Hayter Reed, Mr. Justice Bur-
ridge, Dr. MacCabe, principal of the
o.rnaal school; Mr. H. 73ostook, M. P.,
r. Forget, Indian, Commissioner, and
thers.
Meetings of the committee hereafter
will be held. on `Wednesday or every week
11 o'clock, in the Governor -General's
dice, Parliament buildings. All com-
unioations in the meantime should be
dressed to the Victorian Order fund,

buildings, Ottawa.
After the meeting of tho committee,
the opinion was expressed that at least
half "a million dollars would be raised for
the fund, and that thus the celebration
and commemoration of the Queen's dia-
mond jubilee would be fittingly made for
tlhe whole of Canada.

Celery Compound
Gives New Life.
It should Be Used By Every Ail-
ing Person This Month,
The all important thing for nervous,
sleepless acid run-down people to know
is that Paine's Celery Compound builds
up the whole physical syetem, improves
digestion and regulates the nerves.
By acecrnplishing this work, sound,
regular and refreshing sleep is insured,
that daily helps fieelh•buildiug and the
gathering of strength.
In the winter the majority of men
and women have lived hothouse lives,
Thousands of homes are badly ventil-
ated and without proper ,sanitary ar-
rangement. The air is full of poison
germs that are inhaled by the inmates,
and we find sickness and disease hold
tug sway.
This is the month when the blood is
impure, when eruptions, boils and skin
diseases make life a misery. This is
the month when we see the sallow faces,
the hollow cheeks and sunken eyes, be
tolcening ill health aad.weakness, This
'is the month that demands physical re-
pairing' • i o•
and •i •
p g cleausiug, in order that
the seeds and germs of disease may be
eradicated from the system.
Paine's Celery Compound is the
medicine needed by every broken-down
and diseased mortal at this time. Its
maryellous virtues have beennoted
and commended by the ablest physi-
cians in the world, , and its best and
strongest advocates are those whom
it has res'ored to perfect health.
Dr. A. W. Ii. Newton, an eminent
physican and surgeon of Boston, says:
Paine's, Celery,;Compound is not a
patent medicine, and it must not be
confounded with the ordinary nervines,
bitters and sarsaparillas. It is as much
superior to them ill formula and re-
sults as the diamond is superior to
glass. It purifies the : blood, strength
ells the nerves, and is nature's food for
the brain'.
I had some trouble myself from
blood poisoning received in a very
delicate surgical operation. The
formula of Paine's Celery Compound
led me to try it. and I was much pleas-
ed with the result. I prescribe it for
men and women who have no appetite,
cannot sleep, and are weak and run-
down. For this condition, and for dis
Orders of the blond and nerves, it has
no equal.
"When a man or women has lost ap-
petite, lost sleep, and feel that life is a
burden, that person is in a serious con-
dition. I prescribe Paiuo's Celery Com•
pound for my patients who have these
common and dangerous symptoms
with invariably satisfactory results
It is the best possible remedy to keep
up ouo's strength and energy during
the spring and summer months."
Mrs. Cressman, the Wellesley klepto-
maniac, was brought before Judge
Chisholm at Waterloo, and sentenced to
three months in the ccmmon jail. Mrs
Cressmau stole over $500 worth of yarn
from• a mill in which she was employed.
A most distressing accident occurred
at the New Hamburg' pottery Wednes-
day. The 12 -year old son on Conrad
Schneider, while assisting at the grind
ing of clay, got caught in the horse
power and was not rescued before one
foot was badly smashed and the leg
broken in two places. a
The ratepayers of Essex town defeat-
ed the proposed by-law for $2,000 to im-
prove the waterworks system of the
town. Now it seem that the boilers at
the preseut works have been condemned
and if the town does not take some
-teas in the near future the citizens
will be without a water supply.
