It didn’t look good early on in the semi-final when Parkside scored in the first minute. The home side didn’t let it phase them, and at the 12 minute mark, Karly Pinder scored making it 1-1 and ending the half at that. Parkside came out strong in the second half, scor- ing what looked to be their second goal, only to have it waved off. They continued to press, and a minute later scored again to make it 2-1. As the clock ticked down, it looked like the Panthers might run out of time. They continued to drive to the net though, and with just over 4 minutes left, Jenalyn Baker found the back of the net with the winner to send the Panthers into the final. The championship game against Medway opened slowly, but the pace quickly picked up with the Panthers gradually taking control. Despite many chances, they were unable to score and the half finished scoreless. The second half swung back and forth, with both teams controlling the play for extended periods. With six minutes left to play, Pinder picked up a bounce in front of the net and deposited behind the Medway goalie making it 1-0. It was a tense last few moments as the Panthers attempted to clear the ball out of their own end sev- eral times, until Brittany Caldwell finally cleared the zone and sealed the victory. As the Gold medals were awarded to South Huron, Coach Jim Workman said it was some of the best field hockey he had seen in years and “it had been a real team effort with great skill and grit.” He added the way the team is playing they have as good a chance at winning the Ontario title as any. They leave for the OFSAA competition next Wednesday in St. Catharines. The tournament will be held at Ridley College starting Thursday, with the top four teams moving to the quarter finals Friday after- noon. The four surviving teams face off in the semi- finals Saturday morning and the gold medal game will be played Saturday afternoon. Both teams came out hitting in the first min- utes, but the Irish were the first to score with Mike Burns finding the net. They went up 2-0 minutes later on a goal by Burns letting a hard slapshot go from the face-off circle over the shoulder of Exeter’s goalie Ryan Frayne. With both teams down a man, Lucan goalie Joe Dobbie made several saves before Exeter scored to cut the lead in half. The period ended with Lucan leading 2-1 and a 15-9 shot advan- tage. The second period turned out to be the wildest of the game with Exeter outscoring the home side 5-2 and out- shooting them 17-14. It was a rough night for Irish goalie Joe Dobbie who was pulled midway through the period. Lucan coach Randy Campbell said Dobbie “didn’t play up to his potential, but it was just an off night.” Both teams continued to exchange goals through the period with it ending 6-4. The third period was a replay of the first with Lucan back on the offen- sive, making it 6-5 with a goal by Ben Dobbie, before tieing it up on the power play with one from Darryl Drake. They went ahead to stay on a high slapshot that just dribbled over the line when the Exeter goalie couldn’t get all of it. With just over 4 min- utes left, the Hawks came close to tying it up but the shot dribbled just wide. Turning the play around, Lucan was in on a 2 on 1 with Ben Dobbie finishing it off to seal the win. Exeter made it close with a late goal to make it 8-7, but couldn’t get the equalizer despite pulling their goalie. Lucan finished with a 44-33 advantage in shots. Campbell said his team played “ very well and competed hard against a number one team like Exeter.” The Irish scoring was well balanced with Ben Dobbie getting the hat trick and Mike Burns and Darryl Drake each picking up a pair. Lucan’s next opponent is Oct. 30 at home against against 5 and 1 Lambeth, who Campbell expects a tough game against, since they have added a pair of junior B players. Despite playing well, the seniors didn’t get the bounces when they need- ed them. They were led by Nikki Cyr with 14 points, with Amanda Wuerth con- tributing 8, and Jill Jones 6 points. Denise Ritchie and Julie Prout each had a strong game for the Panthers. Their next action is Oct. 29 at home against Central Huron.
