EXETER - The Exeter
Hawks played a trio of
games in the last week,
winning two and drop-
ping one to bring their
record to 7 and 2,good for
first in their division.
Tuesday the Hawks
travelled to Mt Brydges
and came up against a
red hot goalie.
Despite domi-
nating the game
with a 39-23 shot
advantage, Exeter
was robbed repeat-
edly by opposing
goalie, Brendan
Keddy.
The big factor in the
game was the Hawks
inabiltity to score on the
power-play, going 0 for 7
and they ended up going
home 3-1 losers.
Looking to rebound
from the defeat, Exeter
was at home Friday night
against North Middlesex
and got off to a better
start opening the scoring
at 8:28 of the first period
on a goal by Matt
Vlemmix.
Middlesex came back
strong after the goal how-
ever, outshooting the
home squad 13-8 and
ending the period up 2-1.
The Hawks reversed the
play in the second period
outshooting the visitors
13-10 and outscoring
them 2-0, but still contin-
uing to have problems on
the power play, going 0-
for 9 in the game.
The turning point of the
game came late in the
period with the Hawks
trying to
kill off a
two man
advantage for
Middlesex.
Keeping
the visitors to
the outside with
some good defensive play,
and some timely saves by
goalie Ryan Franye,
Exeter was able to keep
Middlesex from scoring
until Vlemmix picked up a
breakaway pass and went
in to score taking the ini-
tiative away from
Middlesex.
Both teams came out
hitting in the first minutes
of the third period but the
Hawks made it a two goal
lead early on as Vlemmix
scored his third goal pick-
ing up his own rebound
and putting it home.
Despite being down 2
goals, the visitors contin-
ued to press and Frayne
kept them from getting
close with several saves,
including one on a 10
foot shot from the slot
Shawn Sherwood final-
ly sealed the 5-3 win by
lifting a high backhand
out of his own end into
the Middlesex net.
The Hawks were back
in action Saturday night
in Port Stanley and had to
come from behind to win
5-3
They were led by Eric
Gelinas with 3 points and
9 shots. Power plays were
once again ineffective for
both teams with Pt.
Stanley 0 for 8 and Exeter
1 for 6 with the man
advantage.
The Hawks are in Lucan
Wed night and back home
Friday night to face
Belmont.

South Huron girls win WOSSAA golf day
LONDON – About 49 golfers representing 14 schools
braved the cold and damp Oct. 16 for the first girls
WOSSAA golf championship at Maple Ridge Golf Club
in east London.
Karly Pinder notched the lowest score; Katie Stewart
followed with one stroke higher and Brittany Caldwell
came in at three strokes higher in the 9-hole champi-
onship.
This first girls championship was established to pro-
mote girls golf and highlights a growing interest in the
sport. The club owners and pros work with junior pro-
grams was evident.
Boys team
The WOSSAA boys championship was held Oct. 17 at
St. Thomas Golf and Country Club in Union.
The boys team of Matt and Mark Dietrich and Cam
Becker competed against players from 17 regional
schools.
The course played tough and competition was keen.
Although the boys improved their standing from last
year, they didn’t place in the top three.
This placement will likely change in the near future
with the continued high interest in golf.

HENSALL – Paul Smale admits it was
his mistake and if someone is to be
punished, it should be him. Jim
Coleman says that the Hensall Minor
Hockey Association Executive has just
followed the rules and isn’t out to pun-
ish anyone. Meanwhile,16 year old Jeff
Smale is left standing in the middle
with no place to play hockey as the
adults argue the details.
Jeffs problems began when it
appeared Hensall would be unable to
ice a midget team. Jeff’s father Paul
contends he was given verbal consent
by vice president Terry Caldwell, and
secretary Tracy Moir for Jeff to try out
for the Zurich team without having
first registered in Hensall.
After Jeff made the team and paid
his registration in Zurich, his father
attended a meeting Oct. 15 of the
HMHAE where the issue of unsigned
midgets players was discussed.
According to Paul a motion was
introduced stating since Hensall
would not have a midget team due to
lack of a coach, all midget players,
including Jeff Smale should be allowed
to play elsewhere.
After the motion was passed 4-3,
executive member Barb Powers
arrived and the first vote was declared
invalid. A revote was taken and a 4-4
tie resulted, with Barb Powers and
Tracey Moir not voting. The tie was
broken by President John Coleman
voting against the motion.
The following day Mr Smale received
a copy of the minutes of the meeting
from Tracey Moir as well as a letter of
apology for not voting during the sec-
ond motion.
After receiving the letters, Paul con-
tacted W.O.A.A where he was
informed that he would have to put in
an appeal to the Ontario Minor Hockey
Association with a non-refundable fee
of $160.50.
Also present at the meeting was
Jamie Young, whose son Brad was also
applying for a release. Mr Young had
registered his son previous to the
deadline and subsequently his son was
released.
When contacted, Mr Young stated
“there are people with very strong
views on the executive that are not
necessarily in the best interests of
minor hockey.” He added “the whole
affair has been mishandled, mainly on
the part of HMHAE.”
For his part President Coleman stat-
ed that the executive was not out to
punish anyone and they were simply
following the rules. All players must
register with their home league before
they can be released to any other juris-
diction.
Another meeting of the executive
will be held in the next few days to
look at the issue again.
