South Huron Minor Hockey Minor hockey scoreboard Hensall Sherwoods split pair Pat Bolen TIMES ADVOCATE STAFF HENSALL –The Hensall Sherwoods had mixed results the past two weeks spliting a pair of games, starting with a loss in Monkton Oct.11 but coming back with a strong 4-2 win at home against the Tavistock Royals Friday night. It was a wide open game against Monkton as evidenced by the 41-38 shot total against the Sherwoods.Monkton opened the scoring quick- ly at 1:24 of the first peri- od before Chris Kennedy tied it up on the power play midway through the period. A Sherwoods power- play backfired as Monkton scored a short- handed goal to finish the period up 2-1. Hensall came out stronger in the second period getting goals from Scott Phillips and Mike Bowerman but were unable to hold the home side off in the final frame. With two goals in two minutes Monkton sealed the 5-3 victory. Trying to rebound from the Monkton game where Hensall coach Randy Parker felt that no one had a strong game, the Sherwoods came out aggressively against Tavistock Friday night. Despite giving up the first goal on a Tavistock powerplay, Chris Downie tied it up just two minutes later on a Hensall man advantage. It remained a tight game until midway through the second peri- od when Steve Matthews took a breakaway pass on a Tavistock penalty and went in to score making it 2-1. Chris Kennedy put Hensall ahead to stay minutes later finsihing off a two on one with Downie. The two teams exchanged goals in the third with Sean McCann getting the fourth goal to ice the Sherwood victory 4-2. Scott Wood had a strong game for the home side facing 34 Tavistock shots in a physical con- test, with 26 penalty min- utes for the visitors and 36 for Hensall. The next Hensall action is Friday night in Blyth at 9:00 against the Crusaders. As in the past, one of the major goals of the local skating club is to provide an excellent ‘learn to skate’ program. Patty Dougherty returns for another season as the head coach for the CanSkate programs. Assisting with the CanSkaters, in her first year as coach, is long-time member Lauren Smith. Dougherty, Smith and all of their club assistants are keen to teach the begin- ning skills beneficial in a variety of ice sports. While most skaters will contin- ue on in figure skating recreational or competitive levels, these same skills are needed in hockey or ringette. Returning this year to coach the junior and senior skaters in club pro- fessional Patty Dougherty and free- lance coaches Jeff Loosley and Kathy McLlwain. All three coaches work with the skaters developing the different skills, dances and elements of free skate. During the spring and summer skating schools the more advanced skaters went before judges and passed the following: Katrina Jeromkin - Preliminary Freeskate; Kendall Fluttert, Sarah Kwajafa - Canasta; Will Kwajafa, Sabrina Metzger - Baby Blues; Jessica Geoffrey, Mackenzie Holtzmann - Ten Fox; Melissa Barker, Amber Overholt - Junior Silver Skills; Amber Overholt, Lauren Smith, Kelsey Holtzmann - Junior Bronze Freeskate; Kelsey Holtzmann - Keats; Kami Fevery, Abbey Oke - Fourteen Step; Kami Fevery - Senior Bronze Skill; Michelle Roy - Paso Doble; Mackenzie Holtzmann - Preliminary Freeskate; Lauren Smith - Harris Tango; Brennna Anstett - Westminster Waltz, Silver Samba. A special congratulations goes to Brenna Anstett. With the passing of these dances she has achieved her gold level in dance. The gold level is the highest level an amateur skating can achieve. She knows only too well the huge dedication and hours of skat- ing it has taken to reach this level. Registration is still available for the winter session. For more information call Kelly Holtzmann (235-1916). South Huron girls basketball action Panther volleyball CENTRAL HURON – The Junior Panthers travelled to Central Huron St. Annes Oct. 15.
