Field hockey team wins two
Goderich–The South Huron field
hockey Panthers travelled to Goderich
on Oct 4 for a pair of games and came
away with two victories.
In the opening game against
Goderich, the Panthers jumped to an
early lead with Leanne Cronyn con-
verting a pass from Karly Pinder.
Despite the Vikings evening the score,
the girls continued to attack and were
rewarded with a goal by Shelby
Musser from another pass off the stick
of Pinder.
Goderich evened the score in the
second half, but the combination of
Musser and Pinder clicked again with
the latter converting a corner penalty
kick from Musser to seal the 3-2 win
and give them momentum for the
rematch in Exeter Oct 18.
In the second match against St.
Annes, Panther rookies showed their
potential, leading the team to a con-
vincing 9-0 victory.
Jenalyn Baker, Brittney Foster, and
Shelby Musser counted twice, with
Megan Preszcator,Kristen Reschke,
and Carrie Prout eachcontributinga
goal. Prout’s was the first of her
career.
On Saturday, the team travelled to
Waterloo to an invitational tournament
at St.Johns Kilmarnock School.
Playing their best hockey of the sea-
son in the first game against St Johns,
they were ahead early on a goal by
Reschke.
Six minutes later they increased
their lead to 2-0 as Pinder deposited a
Reschke rebound.
An attempted rally by St Johns in the
second half was cut short by Pinder
blowing past the defense for her sec-
ond goal to cap the win.
The next opponent for the bruised-up
Panthers was last years OFSAA cham-
pions from Burlington.
Despite missing Musser due to an
injury from the previous game,the
Panthers held the champions off the
scoresheet until Notre Dame scored in
a last minute goal-mouth scramble.
Despite the loss, valuable experience
was gained by all the Panther players
especially Maria Dinney in goal.

Jill Jones drives up the court during senior girls action
against St.Annes last Wednesday. Jones, Nikki Cyr, and
Amanda Wuerth all had strong games leading the
Panthers to a 37-30 victory. Coach Terry O’Rouke
said “the team has had trouble scoring in their previ-
ous games,” but it was not evident as the Panthers
were aggressive on the ball and driving to the net
throughout the game. Despite a late St.Anne’s charge
in the final minutes, good ball control by the Panthers
preserved the win. The junior girls were not as fortu-
nate losing a close game in the final minutes to St
Anne’s 40-31. Maggie Roberts and Emily Sararas
were high scorers for the Panthers with 10 points for
Roberts and Sararas getting nine. Katie Stewart
played a strong game at point. (photo/Pat Bolen)
