The Times-Advocate, 2002-10-16, Page 7LUCAN–Wednesday
night the Lucan Irish
were in action on home
ice against Port Stanley.
Looking to even their
record at 2 and 2, the
Irish came out strong,
dominating the visitors
physically and in scoring
chances, holding a wide
edge in shots on goal and
penalties. Despite taking
the play to their oppo-
nents, Lucan was unable
to bury any of its chances.
At the other end, Irish
goalie Joe Dobbie was
tested infrequently, but
was solid when needed,
getting some help from
one of his goal posts part-
way through the first
period to keep the game
scoreless.
Trying to get back in the
game, Port Stanley came
out hard in the second
period forcing Dobbie to
make several difficult
saves to keep his team in
the game
The frustration level of
the visiting team with
their inability to score
was evident from the
sound of players slam-
ming sticks at the Port
Stanley bench as several
were stoned in close by
Dobbie. Feeding off their
goalies solid play, the
Irish retook the attack
and scored the first goal
of the game, as Brady
Kjelagaurd found the
mark allowing Lucan to
end the period up 1-0.
Intent on setting a phys-
ical tone early in the third
period, Irish forward
Tyler Silver had the best
hit of the night, driving a
hard shoulder into a
defenseman coming up
the boards with his head
down.
Fired up from the hit,
the Irish continued to
attack but were unable to
capitalize on their
chances. Ryan Keating
had two of the best
opportunities as twice he
was alone in front of the
net but was stoned each
time.
Irish Coach Randy
Campbell said converting
on their chances has been
a problem for the team so
far, but felt his team
played “very well.”
Port Stanley broke
though midway through
the period tying it up, and
looking for more off the
faceoff, forcing Dobbie to
make another save to
keep the score tied.
Despite his efforts, the
visitors scored again min-
utes later to put them-
selves in front for good.
As the clock wound
down, the game took on a
nastier tone with several
high sticking and rough-
ing penalities handed out,
including a Lucan penalty
for cross checking in the
head that left a Port
Stanley player motionless
on the ice for several min-
utes, although he was
eventually able to skate
off under his own power.
O’Rouke admitted his
team lost some of its focus
near the end of the game
but added that some of
the officiating was “ques-
tionable,” as evidenced by
the 10-2 margins of
penalties called against
Lucan. Two more late
goals by Port Stanley
made the final score 4-1
and dropped the Lucan
record to 1-3-1. Their
next action is in Mitchell
Friday night.

Matt Dietrich is shown here with the golf plaque he
received from the American junior Golf association
for shooting the lowest score on the final round of
the tournament held at the Greenhills course in
London Aug 30. Competing against 18 and under
players from all over the United States and Canada,
Matt shot a 66, one off the course record. Although
it was his first time in the tournament, a strong
putting game during the final round enabled him to
shoot the 66. Thanks to the Ironwood Golf course
for their sponsorship of Matt.(Photo/Pat Bolen)
