Young cowboy wins big

HENSALL – Matt
Mousseau, 20, won a
new saddle, belt and
cash as the highest
money-earning steer
wrestler in the 2002
Dodge Rodeo Tour
Championships in
Mississauga.
He also won a belt
buckle and cash at the
Ontario championships
in Stratford at the end
of September.
Matt’s mount is
‘Chuck’, an 8-year-old
Quarter horse trained to
‘bull-dog’ a horned, 600
lb. steer. A second horse
and rider, called a
‘hazer’ keeps the steer
running in a straight
direction.
Matt jumps off Chuck
at about 40 km/hr, grabs
the racing steer by the
horns and flips it over
on the ground, all in his
winning time of 4.4
seconds!
He was named rookie
of the year in 2001 with
a time of 4.1 sec.
Cowboy future
The rodeo circuit
keeps Matt travelling
every weekend from
May to September – as
far as Timmins and as
near as Lucknow.
Matt will compete in
the rodeo at the Royal
Winter Fair in Toronto
in November.
His future plans
include competing in
the U.S., starting in
Michigan. He hopes to
go pro and expand into
calf roping and team
roping.
Calf roping requires
one person on horse-
back to rope a calf,
jump off the horse, flip
the calf onto its side
and tie its legs together.
Team roping involves
two riders; one ropes
the calf’s head and the
other ropes its heels.
Although he’s never
been injured and steer
wrestling is safer than
bull riding, Matt said
his knees do take a
beating.
His construction job
keeps him fit during the
week to perform steer
wrestling on the week-
ends. Matt says these
cowboys are called ‘the
linebackers of rodeo’.
Although he’s been
called in to round up
stray cattle, Matt
admits, “There isn’t
much demand for real-
life cowboys around
here.”
Rodeo tryouts
Cowboy wannabes
can try out the rodeo
sport, even if they’ve
never ridden before at a
steer wrestling clinic at
Ed Dewetering’s stable
north of Crediton Nov.
16-17.
Anyone interested can
call Ed at 234-6130 or
Matt at 236-4558.
Matt says Ed’s one of
the best trainers in the
rodeo sport.

Masters end season

LONDON-The Exeter
Masters finished off the
season Wednesday night
at London’s Cove Road
The Masters were up
against Real West, a team
that controls the ball and
attacks very well.
The strong defensive
play of the back line and
Exeter’s goalie Colin
Coburn kept them off the
score board early. Mid
way through the first
half, Exeter’s Rob Peat
scored on a long shot
which the goalie could
not get enough of to pre-
vent from entering the
net.
Real West tied the game
just as the half was end-
ing, and in the second
half took control of the
game and scored twice
more to win 3-1
The Masters would like
to thank the people of
Exeter for helping to
make the past season a
successful one. Special
thanks goes to Dick Lord,
Player/Manager for his
dedication to the team.
