The Hensall Sherwoods started off the 2002-2003 W.O.A.A. Senior Hockey sea- son with a hard-fought 6-5 overtime vic- tory over visiting Tavistock Royals. The Sherwoods started strong with two goals in the first 2:42 of the first period. Steve Matthews scored the first goal with assists by Chris McDonald and Scott Phillips. Sean McCann then gave Hensall a 2-0 lead, scoring a breakaway goal on a feed from Chris Kennedy. McDonald then gave the Sherwoods a 3-0 lead with 6 minutes left in the first, with Matthews and Phillips assisting. The Royals pulled within one with just under 3 minutes to go in the first. Phillips had the only goal of the second, with McDonald and Matthews picking up the helpers. Rob Silver put Hensall up 5-1 at 34 seconds into the third, with Kennedy and Les McGregor picking up assists. Tavistock then started their comeback with 4 goals in just over ten minutes. Two of the goals came on the power play. The third period ended 5-5. The overtime was only 46 seconds old when Phillips found the back of the net for his second goal of the game. Scott Richardson and Jeff Glavin assisted. The Royals out-shot the Sherwoods 40- 28. Andy Glavin played extremely well in goal for Hensall. Tavistock had 21 min- utes in penalties to 20 minutes for Hensall. Hensall had only 14 players dressed for the game, while Tavistock had the full 20.
