The Times-Advocate, 2002-10-02, Page 18ZURICH - The afternoon ‘Kick-Off’ Event bands who volunteered their talents have packed up. Kenny and the others in the ‘Full House Tour’ have gone home. The tent is down and the clean up, complete. The Zurich Arena has been restored to its pre-show state, and now everyone is back to their everyday habits. The shows were fantastic! The change in venue made things a little ‘warmer’ than planned, and evening audience members became ‘close’ friends with those around them. But neverthe- less, the capacity crowd seemed to graciously tolerate this, caught up in the excitement of the show itself. A team of 90 made up the ‘Full House Tour’ crew who set up and ran the show, and those in attendance marveled at the imposing extent of the sound and lighting required. The crew and entertainers loved being in Zurich and had nothing but praise for the volunteers and for the food. Jerry Rader made sure their stomachs were full which in turn made their hearts happy. Without the volunteer efforts of so many, these shows could not have taken place. About 150 worked on behalf of the Foundation for the afternoon and evening events. They truly exemplify the meaning of "Community". The ‘Bluewater Community Development Foundation’ members were also happy. Their initial goals were met! And, short of having a facility in Bluewater to house another such event, they are keen to do it again. (519) 534-1638 or 534-2980 Exeterite wins in big way at walkathon By Sandra Forster TIMES-ADVOCATE STAFF LONDON – Sometimes doing something new pays off. Nancy Pearce of Exeter was one of about 20 sup- porters on Terra Ahrens’ ‘Leaky Valves’ team in the Cheerios Mother Daughter Walk for Heart & Stroke Sept. 22 at the Fanshawe Conservation Area in London. As a pre-registered walk- er, Pearce’s name was drawn from 10,000 entries Canada-wide in an early- bird draw, winning her a $2,500 travel certificate from corporate sponsor Merit Travel of Toronto. “I’d never done this before. It was the most fun,” Pearce says. Area co-ordinator Cheryl Curtis says, “We are thrilled someone from our region won this prize and we hope her travels pro- vide her with a lifetime of memories.” Pearce hopes to take a cruise with her prize. Ahrens says the 4th annual walk was a lot of fun for the 560 people par- ticipating and $56,000 was raised – more than double last year’s total of $27,000. Her team was the top fund-raiser, bringing in $9,043. Curtis reports 63 Canadian cities held walks, raising over $1 mil- lion. People from all over Middlesex and Huron counties and family mem- bers from other parts of Ontario participated in the London walk. She’s already taking team regis- trations for next year. Money raised in the walk goes to support research into heart disease in women and to provide health information. Ahrens, who was born with congenital heart dis- ease is scheduled for heart surgery in January. Several Exeter business- es provided door prizes, including Body & Soul Spa, Exeter Golf Club, Thames Insurance Brokers and Moffatt & Powell. A grey Chevy Lumina van ran into the rear of a transport truck, then the driver of the van flagged down a passing motorist and fled the scene. Officers cleaned up the accident site and firefighters disconnected the smoking battery cables. On Sept. 28, the driver of the van, which had been rented from a dealership, was arrested on Main St., Exeter. A 49-year-old London man was charged with driving while disqualified, failing to remain at the scene of an accident and breaching a probation order.
