Usborne Township’s Michele Hodgert was inducted into the Ontario Ringette Association’s Hall of Fame as a community builder at the Western Ontario Ringette Association meeting Sept. 12 in Stratford. The honour is a huge one in small town Ontario as not many rural ringette officials get the nod.Ten ringette officials are inducted into the provincial hall each year from across Ontario. Hodgert,36,was nominat- ed by two past presidents of the Huron-Perth Ringette Association. All of Hodgert’s three children play or have played ringette.Alana,11,is in her eighth season,Andrew,6, played for three years and Amanda,4,is starting her second season.Hodgert said she enjoys coaching at “the grass roots.I love to see a girl come into the sport as an ‘ice walker’ and help her progress into a good skater.I give 100 per cent of myself to my sport and hope I can pass this on to my players.Hodgert has coached Petite,Tween,Novice and Bunny which she is coach- ing this season. She has been the Huron-Perth scheduler since 1989-90 and has been the statistician since 1993-94 (she has dropped the stat job this season). Hodgert has been the Exeter and District Ringette Association tournament fund- raising chairperson since 1992-93 and is the association’s president this year. With the scheduling position,Hodgert makes sense of over 500 games to be played. Hodgert is proud of the honour.“It’s great knowing that someone appreciates my time I spend for the kids,” she said, adding she wouldn’t be able to do all she does in ringette without having a seasonal job at Ironwood Golf Club as clubhouse manager.(photo/Craig Bradford) Recognized NILESTOWN — Sometimes your best effort isn’t enough. That’s the story behind the Exeter Fury’s 1-0 road loss to the second place White Eagles Saturday. The home team scored late in the game to get the victo- ry. The game was evenly played with both teams having excellent opportunities to score. The home squad had the first chance but were unable to score on a penalty kick, firing it wide. Shortly after they missed an empty net when a shot bounced off the post across the front of the net and out the other side. The game was scoreless into the sec- ond half with Exeter’s defence of Joe Forrester, Ryan Hern, Shawn McFalls and Ron Wagler turning away the oppo- sition time after time. The Fury had a good chance but Marty DeBruyn’s kick from the top of the box sailed over the net. The White Eagles had a goal called back due to a foul on Joe Forrester. Forrester’s hustle allowed him to get a good position on the ball carrier who shoved him down as he put his kick into the net. The game was back and forth when the Fury left a man unmarked on a corner kick with about five minutes left and a second later the ball was behind keeper Nathan Holmes who had no chance on the play. The Fury didn’t give up easily. The team marched down the field pressing for the equalizer. Their best chance came when Tim Hundey found himself alone in close with the keeper on the ground. Unfortunately for the Fury, Hundey’s off-balance kick trickled right into the goalie’s outstretched arms. “That was one our best played games of the season,” Fury spokesperson Jason McFalls said. “Everyone played well and our defence was outstanding.” The loss drops Exeter’s record to 5-7-4 and 19 points, good for sixth place in the Western Ontario Soccer League’s Third Division. The White Eagles sit at 11-1-4 and 37 points, just two points behind first place Curinga (12-2-3, 39 points) with a game in hand. America is right in the hunt for first at 11-3-3 and 36 points. Woodstock is fourth at 9-5-2 and 29 points and Ingersoll is right in front of the Fury at 6-4-7 and 25 points. The Fury will hold onto sixth spot as Taxandria has just a game left at 4-10-3 and 15 points. St. Columban is eighth at 4-12-1 and 13 points while the London Hornets at 3-11-3 and 12 points and the Delhi Royals at 3-13-0 and nine points round out the division Exeter finishes their season with two games this week: a rescheduled game at home versus Woodstock tomorrow at 6:15 p.m. and at St. Columban Sunday at 4 p.m. Fury fight hard but lose anyway MITCHELL — The Panthers growled loud on the field hockey pitch in their first regular season action Friday in Mitchell. South Huron District High School’s field hockey team overcame the ele- ments and the opposition to post two strong wins. In the first game of the season, South Huron soundly defeated Listowel 4-0. After only three min- utes, Leanne Cronyn scored the first goal. Shelby Musser notched two more at the 10 and 17 minute marks. The score at half time stood at 3-0 and could have been double that, coach Jim Workman said. Lindsay Muller scored her first goal in her first league game 26 minutes into the second half. The game allowed all 20 play- ers to play and gave the rookies some valuable experience. Maria Dinney recorded the shutout. In the second game that day, the Panthers easily defeated Mitchell 3-0. Musser opened the scor- ing after 11 minutes and Cronyn added a second at 17 minutes. Brittany Foster scored her first goal of the season 20 min- utes into the second half. Workman said this was a physical game and a number of players received minor injuries, but the Panthers demon- strated that the best way to win is to score more goals than the opposition. Dinney again recorded the shutout and strong games were exhibited by all 20 players. Heywood stroked a hole in one at Ironwood Golf Club during Senior Men’s league action. He used his driver to ace the 186 yard, par three 15th hole. The feat was witnessed by Ron Chanyi, Wayne Pearce and Jim Wallace. Needless to say, Heywood won the closest to the pin honours on the 15th hole that day during the wrap-up tournament.
