Phil Main hosts Festival's gala auction
Local radio personality Phil
Main will be hosting the Blyth
Festival's annual gala dinner and
auction on Saturday, Oct. 29.
“The community has been
tremendously generous in answering
the call and we’ve collected an
enormous number of wonderful
items that will provide our audience
with wonderful packages to bid on,"
says co-ordinator and Festival board
member Sara Trainor. “We have
exciting adventures, romantic
getaways at a number of Ontario’s
Finest Inn’s, theatre tickets, gift
packages and collector's items such
as an autographed Eddie Shack
Toronto Maple Leaf’s jersey, an
authentic Chinese brocade, and a
signed copy of Margaret Atwood’s
Oryx and Crate.
The evening, a gala masquerade,
begins with a preview of the items at
5:30 p.m. Dinner, prepared and
served by the Fireside Cafe, begins
at 6:30 p.m. A miscellany of silent
auction items will be offered as well
as games and prizes for the audience
to enjoy.
At 8:15 p.m. the live auction
begins and will be followed by a
costume parade.

Memories of the Islanders and the
CBC Jubilee, will be slopping at
Blyth Memorial Hall, Sunday, Oct.
30 at 2 p.m.
The show will feature

The show will be a recreation of
the CBC TV summer series “Don
Messer’s Jubilee,” that first aired in
the fall of 1959.
Leadbeater who has participated
in the show for 11 years, said
Canadian fiddle legend Don Messer
was a big influence. “I used to watch
the show all the lime growing

One of the many highlights of the
show is expected to be the fiddling
in a tribute to Messer, from Woods.

Laplante has served as a juror of

Festival in Australia, the CBC
National Competition (Canada's
most prestigious), the Honens
International Piano Competition, the
William Kapell International Piano
Competition and the Van Cliburn
International Piano Competition for
Outstanding Amateurs.
An active recording artist,
Laplante’s releases on the Analalekta
label include works by Liszt (Felix
1995). Ravel and Rachmaninov, as
well as an award-winning Brahms
album (Felix 1996).
He has also recorded for CBC and
Melodia. '

I with Joav Talmi and I'Orchestre
Symphonique de Quebec,
nominated for the 2001
Award.
“We play a lot of the old war time
songs like 'Don't Sit Under the
Apple Tree,'" he said. “People love
to sing along to the songs.”

such as the Jitterbug and the
Charleston.
“It’s a new program for 2005,"
Leadbeater said. “[We’ll] have some
new songs.”
There was some controversy as to
the name of the show. Due to a
pending lawsuit the name of fiddler
Don Messer can not be used in
conjunction with advertising and the
name was changed to Memories of
the Islanders anM the CBC Jubilee.

Legion’s scrapbook a winner

He attended the president’s meeting
and sports seminar on Saturday.
Joining him on Sunday were
comrades Glenn Bridge and Jo-Ann
McDonald for the general reports
and business meeting. Comrade
McDonald was presented with the
award for the winning scrapbook for
“D” division of District “C” area.
This is the second year in a row the
Brussels Legion scrapbook has
earned first place.
Comrades Julie Harrison, Mabel
Glanville, Howard and Audrey
Hack well were hard at work at the
Sunday night dance. There were
over 80 in attendance to enjoy the
music of Country Ways.
Don’t forget this Friday night is
the first wing and pub night of the
year with a Halloween theme. There
will be prizes for costumes and team
games. Come in and join in the fun.
Friday, Oct. 28 is the start of the
2005 poppy campaign. Poppy boxes
will be in various locations in
Brussels and donations are
gratefully accepted.
If unable to donate, please take a
poppy anyway and wear it proudly
in support of the fallen heroes and
surviving veterans.
It is the Royal Canadian Legion's
purpose to perpetuate the memory
and deeds of the fallen and to keep
an annual memorial day.
Remembrance Day is everyone’s
opportunity to remember the
sacrifices of those brave comrades
who gave their lives in service.
Wear your poppy proudly on your
left side, over your heart, from Oct.
28 - Nov. 11, when it shall be placed
