Increased physical activity can also alleviate feelings of depression and decrease trips to the doctor’s office and hospital. At Brussels United Church, Nelva Scott a volunteer from Town and Country Support Services, leads a group of active seniors every Monday and Wednesday in simple exercises and stretches. “I come out to keep my weight down,” Audrey Cardiff, a regular participant in the classes said. “Also for the socialization aspect.” Scott said a lot of the women in the class get together afterwards and go out for coffee. “It gets me up and moving in the morning,” Jane Hall said. According to Health Canada, physical activity reduces the rate of bone loss associated with osteoporosis and maintains strength and flexibility, balance and co ordination and can help reduce the risk of falls. Also regular physical activity can prolong independent living. Another volunteer, Corey Bos leads a group of active seniors in Blyth at the Christian Reformed Church Mondays from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. “Afterwards we usually sit around and talk with coffee,” she said. “I certainly think it’s important for seniors to be as physically active as possible,” Dr. Bokhout, a family physician in Clinton said. He advises anyone who is unsure of their medical condition to speak with their doctor or a medical professional who knows their condition before beginning. “It’s important to start slow,” Bokhout said. “And build up because [exercise] can put a strain on parts of your body that haven’t been used in a while.” Getting started can be the hardest part. Health Canada provides some ideas to help such as: -building physical activity into your daily routine; -walking wherever and whenever you can; -taking the stairs instead of the elevator; -carrying groceries home; -finding activities that you enjoy; -and participating in a community class. Working out with others can help motivate you to keep at it. For the Loder clan of Blyth, their new business venture in Goderich as owners of Total Fitness is cause to grin. It's the realization of dreams and goals the family has worked towards for a number of years. For Linda, health has always been a primary interest. After high school she became a registered practical nurse. A few years later she married her husband, Keith. As they began planning to have children their interest in health intensified. “Mom and Dad have been interested in natural health since as far back as I can remember,” 22- year-old Shanda said. The Loders have four children, all of whom put an emphasis on physical activity and well-being. Now, as those children have reached adulthood, the Loder family is choosing to share their excitement for health and well-being with the surrounding community. Linda, who is a certified natural health consultant, will also be offering free health seminars from time to time starting in January to help people learn about various aspects of health and fitness. Shanda, who is a certified reflexologist, is looking forward to helping people put their best foot forward said, “Reflexology is a great way to flush out build-ups in the body, it increases circulation and is Wednesdays & Thursdays Roast Beef Special with Dessert 11:30 am - 3:30 pm Fridays Fish & Chip Special And Dessert Sm $9.95 Reg. $11.95 lg. $14.95 11:30 am - 7:00 pm Seniors* Specials with Dessert PLUS Tea/coffee $9.95 Eat In or Take Out Walton United Church Annual Turkey Supper Takeouts Available^ Wednesday, November 2 Jr from 4:30 pm - 7:00 pm at the Brussels Arena.
