A project that started out with the
intention of keeping three young
girlfriends busy during a camping
trip last August has since escalated
into a business.
Madison Sjaarda, 10. Jaime
Poortinga, 11 and Justine Verburg,
eight, are the creators and owners of
Molly J Beans Beadery a jewellery
company that creates bracelets,
necklaces, and anklets.
“When we were camping a lady
asked if she could buy one (of the
pieces we made]," Sjaarda said. “We
were just doing it for fun. I didn’t
think it would be a big business.”
But, big it is certainly becoming.
Molly J Beans set up a display
selling their product at the
Thresher’s Reunion in Blyth, the
Goderich Harvest Festival, home
parties and gatherings and some
friends and family are planning on
donning their jewels for Grade 8
graduation.
“It’s a good experience (for the
girls,” Sjaarda’s mother Brenda said.
“It gets them to talk to people.”
Upcoming plans are to bring the
display to the Legion Craft Show in
Brussels, and the Clinton and
District Christian School hobby and
book fair.
The jewellery has a mature look
with linked wires separated with
fashionable beads. Many of the
buyers, the girls said are adults.
Molly J Beans Beadery takes
custom orders and can be reached at
526-7444.
Surprised at the popularity and
success of their business, the girls
they earn to charity.
“I think it’s a nice idea," Madison
Sjaarda said. “We have a lot of
money and other people don't get
that much.”
decided to give back to the
community. They are planning on
donating their jewellery at a silent
auction in November at the school
