Oct. 14 Huron Perth MP Paul Steckle announced that the federal government will be giving a grant of $50,000 to the Huron County Health Unit to develop a program called Take Notice. Take Notice is a program that targets three key issues for teens: bullying, substance abuse and stress. There will be a facilitators’ guide ready to distribute to local teachers and students this coming new year. The guide will provide training on how to help teens with these issues. The second phase of the project is a DVD that was written, directed and produced by two young film­ makers from Clinton, Isaac and Elliott Fisher as well as Jesse Obituaries META BRADWIN On Oct. 7, 2005, Meta Bradwin, youngest daughter of A.E. Bradwin and Selena Emigh, died in Toronto and was buried in Park Lawn Cemetery, Toronto on Oct. 11, 2005. Her mother, Selena, was daughter of John G. Emigh and Anne McNames, and was born and grew up in Blyth. Her father, A.E. Bradwin was editor of The Blyth Standard from 1892 to 1906. He also served on Blyth council. Meta Bradwin’s grandfather, John G. Emigh, was Blyth’s first fire chief, appointed in 1888. He lived most of his life in Blyth. Meta was bom a few years after the Bradwins left Blyth. The film intends to provide the audience with an inside look at a rural school, youth culture and violence and victimization. “We wanted to ensure young people knew they were being heard,” Bonnie Baynham, community developer for the health unit said. The program was initiated from local reports of focus groups with teens. “Overwhelming numbers of students expressed concern with the level of violence and bullying occurring at school,” a press release from the health unit stated. Steckle supported the program stating that “some people think that families had strong ties! to the village of Blyth. Some of the older residents might remember Meta holidaying with her grandparents and Aunt Allie. Meta was one of eight children: Milton, Lorena, Charles, Emigh (called “Brad”), Alice, Franklin, Edward, and Meta. Franklin was editor of Mitchell's newspaper. In earlier years, Meta travelled extensively throughout the world. A family member describes her as “very well read and informed with an intelligent curiosity”. Despite her advanced years she gave up driving only a few months ago. She was 93 years of age. we’re throwing money away. The [youth involved] are very skilled and I’m proud to be a part of this program.” The program is expected to be implemented in January in secondary schools across Huron County. Baynham said there has already been interest from other counties to implement the program. A large scale youth event is also planned for the upcoming year. “We’d like to celebrate the strengths and abilities of the. youth and [bullying and abuse] certainly connect with health,” Baynham said.
