Use a certified technician when installing wood stove
Bv Bonnie Gropp
Citizen editor
If you're thinking of installing a
wood stove or fireplace there are
some things you have to consider.
First a building permit is required
for the installation of any wood or
coal heating unit. Upon completion
the building official will do an
inspection.
Insurance and liability are other
facts you will want to look at before
beginning. Doug Sholdice. owner of
an insurance business in Brussels
and a volunteer firefighter said that
stoves must be installed according to
the instructions. “Each has a panel
on the back with a clearance for
combustible. For example the
distance to rear could be 18 inches
while the side is 24 inches. It will
depend on the type of stove, but
must be adhered to as a safety
issue.”
Your home insurance provider
must be informed if you are
installing a solid fuel auxiliary heat.

as how much wood you will use.
where the stove or fireplace is
located and what type of chimney
you have.
The criteria does not apply to gas
or propane. “Woodstoves tend to
cause fires,” said Sholdice. “Gas and
propane arc a more-controlled heat
source.”
With the addition ol a grain or
wood stove. Sholdice said it is
probable that your policy may
increase. “Most companies do
charge extra lor a solid fuel auxiliary
heal."
Fhcre is no additional charge with
a wood furnace as it heats (he whole
house.
However, there arc clearances that
must be followed.
Failure to notify your insurance
provider may cost in the long wrong
if there should be a fire “The bottom
line is, if you have a wood stove

know about it.”
To install a stove or fireplace,
Sholdice recommends hiring a
qualified technician. Look for
someone with their wood energy
technical transfer certification.
However, if you choose to do it
yourself, “make sure you install to
the specifications on the label.”

the event of a fire, he cautions,
“there might be a problem regarding
coverage.”
A little Tuscany
Create a Tuscan hideway with Mediterranean style and
colours.
(MF) — Life under the Tuscan sun
may seem like a faraway dream, but
soon you won't have to look much
further than your own home.
Homeowners can now create their
own hideaway, with decor inspired
by the style and colours of the
Mediterranean.
Mediterranean style, sometimes
referred to as Spanish modern,
combines a unique blend of Old
World rustic with New Age design.
Home-design stores are now tapping
into the interest in the laid-back,
elegant lifestyle of the region.
“Mediterranean lifestyle centres
around entertaining and enjoying
great food in the company of friends
and family, in a lively atmosphere
filled with warm colours and
intricate accessories," says Taylor
Hastie, director of design and trend
for EXPO Design Centre.
When creating your own
Provencal hideaway, look for
vibrant spice colour schemes and
use sunflower accents and olive and
rosemary motifs to enhance the
charm and atmosphere. You can also
texture walls with layers of paint and
glaze by having them hand-rubbed
on plaster or sand-textured wall.
Mosaic tije is one signature of
Mediterranean style that brings a
unique artistic twist to home decor.
Mosaic designs easily embody the
beauty of a Mediterranean interior,
and add a unique, personal touch to
your home. Glass mosaic tile can be
added permanently on a floor, a
wall, or as a kitchen backsplash.
You can add to the overall
atmosphere by decorating with
marble columns and statues or
smaller accent pieces, as well as
items such as stone fountains and
hammered copper cookware.
Furniture styles can range from
simply functional to extremely
formal.
For a bit of Moroccan influence,
try highlighting an accessory such as
a wrought-iron fireplace screen or a
burnished bronze vase.
Just remember to be creative, and
choose the style that suits you best to
bring casual, modern style to your
home.
