(Heather Crawford photo) Soc. seeks members The Brussels Horticultural Society is looking for younger members. “Our members are older ladies and gentlemen,” society president Gertie Kellington said.' “We would also like younger people to join.” The Society meets every second month and currently has about 20 members. “We have guest speakers and twice a year we hold auction sales,” Kellington said. The auctions are held in the spring and in November. Society member Phyllis Mitchell is the auctioneer. Ida Evans, one of the first members of the Horticultural Society when it started in 1954, left money to the society and they donated a podium to the Brussels Morris-Turnberry Arena in her memory. “We wanted something to give back to the community,” Society member Jane White said. “We thought a lot of people in the community use the arena and they can use the podium for weddings and different functions.” If you would like to join the horticultural society, call Gertie Kellington at 887-6591. News from the Brussels Legion By Jo-Ann McDonald Newsletters went out to Comrades of the Brussels Legion Branch. We hope everyone takes a moment to fill out the response section and drop it off or send it to the Branch. The Thursday night blind mixed darts begin this week at 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome and no experience is necessary. It’s just an evening of fun all for a buck. The Friday night supper of ham and scalloped potatoes was enjoyed by a good crowd. This week is roast beef. A fish fry was held on Saturday and a smaller than usual but extremely hungry bunch, enjoyed the meal. A great job was done by cooks John Harrison, Jim Alton, Terry Buchanan and Lawrence Machan who were assisted by two members of the Brussels Cadet Corps. Inside on kitchen duty were Sandra Josling, Mabel Willis, Julie Harrison. Helen Brenie, Judy Buchanan, Deb Caan and Mabel G'anville. There are two weeks left in October before the next early bird draw for membership. Dues are $40 now and go up to $45 after Dec. 1. Sports sheets are up and interested Comrades should get in and check the dates and sign up. Comrade Gord Nichol is home from hospital and we hope he continues to improve. Eating out has become a leisure activity and I heard several folks commenting that they would be eating out four nights straight. Perhaps a time of exercise could become part of every food activity. The Legion fish fry, the harvest dance at the community centre and the anniversary dinner for the Presbyterian Church were all well attended and enjoyed by all. Peter Workman has had a good fall visit enjoying the colours in the trees. He lives above the tree line so his appreciation is much more acute than ours. Some of the photos that Peter has taken are incredible. Tiny flowers jutting out of the rock, blues and greens of the northern lights that are so vivid they seem unreal and sunsets with golds and yellows with water on the horizon are awe some. We live in a beautiful country. So goodbye southern Ontario and back to work in Nunavat. It was good to see you Peter. Bye now, Betty G.W. —- - WW^A ......
