The Citizen, 2005-10-13, Page 22PAGE 22. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2005. County council briefs County applies for sewage treatment funding Huron County has applied for a second time for provincial funding to adapt sewage treatment facilities in Wingham and Exeter to accept septage from septic tank contractors. Scott Tousaw. director of planning and development, told councillors at the Oct. 6 meeting of county council that the county had applied two y^ars ago under a provincial program but had been rejected. Though he was not optimistic this application would bring funding, Tousaw said it was necessary to make a point that provincial support was going to be necessary in order to implement a moratorium on spreading the contents of septic tanks on farm fields. It’s nearly five years since the province said it would ban the practice in five years and nothing has been done to prepare, he said. Meanwhile haulers have been getting hints that the banning of spreading will take place in 2007, Tousaw said. Bill Dowson, councillor for Bluewater, complained that there are millions of dollars sitting in the Canada-Ontario Rural Infrastructure Fund (COMRIF) but projects are going unfunded. “I think it’s a bit of a strategy to keep the money as long as possible,” he'said.*** Dowson also asked for a report on the effect of higher energy costs on the county budget and an exploration of what can be done to lower those costs. The county needs to take a look at the size of vehicles it owns as well as heating and lighting for its buildings. “What can we do to conserve?”*** South Huron councillor Dave Urlin urged re-instatement of councillors’ annual tour of county facilities which had been cancelled as a cost-cutting measure. “You’re got to get out and see these things,” Urlin said of county facilities like the homes for the aged or county roads and bridges. If councillors don’t see county assets they can’t effectively manage them while in the council chambers, he said. *** Failure of the county’s homes for the aged to meet a provincial standard to minimize safety and security risks for residents has meant a $20,000 expenditure to change locks in the homes. Because mechanical keys were being misplaced and doors left open to some facilities that should be locked, a new keyless lock system is being installed at a cost of $10,000 for each home.*** The county will be a partner in Howick Twp.’s Rural Economic Development Program application to get funding for a new library for the township. The township has been proposing amalgamation of the Fordwich and Gorrie branches of the Huron County Library into one central location that could be open more hours and provide more books. The library board has earlier proposed closing the Howick library branches but agreed to work with one larger branch. Museum women dare to bare in fundraising calender A new fundraiser sponsored by the Stratford-Perth Museum is guaranteed to knock the socks off those who see it. The Stratford-Perth Museum’s 2006 calendar, called Treasures, is a thing of pure beauty that is based on the British Calendar Girls fundraiser. Beautifully photographed by Annette av Paul, the calendar features a wonderful group of women who are mature in age but young at heart as they tastefully expose some skin while posing with various museum artifacts. The calendar, which is both sentimental and humorous, sells for $20. The calendar will be officially launched and available for sale during another museum fundraiser to be held at the Mitchell Community Centre on Saturday, Oct. 15 and Sunday, Oct. 16. Fifty years of Fashion, a fashion show featuring men, women and children, will showcase 1880 - 1930 period clothing from the collection of Marion Kernighan. Starting Oct. 15, Treasures will also be available for purchase in Stratford at Bradshaws, The Buzzstop, Callan Books, CIBC, Classic Art, Cooking up a Storm, Fanfare Books, St. Willibrord Credit Union and Touchmark. The calendar will also be available at Music in Sebringville. All money raised from sales of the calendar goes to the Stratford-Perth Museum.
