Sat. 8-6:30, Sunday Closed
From Oct. 17 - Nov. 11, the North
Huron Museum is offering a special
exhibit of military artifacts on loan
from collector Jeff Hollenbeck.
The collection includes items that
belonged to people from this area, as
well as items from individuals in the
German, American, French and
Swedish armies.
Most of the items on display come
from the era of World War II (1939-
1945). There are items from World
War 1 (1914-1918) as well as a
Korean-era uniform and equipment
in honour of Hollenbeck’s
uncle. Glen Foxton. w'ho fought in
Korea with the Princess Patricia
Canadian Light Infantry.
He survived his time in Korea but
was killed in a car accident shortly
after getting home.
Hollenbeck's collection evolved
out of a “deep respect for all
veterans as they chose to put their
life on the line to protect our
freedoms. I think a lot of younger
people, including my generation (he
is 33) have forgotten the sacrifices
and hardships it took everyone
(civilians, servicemen and women)
to succeed and enable us to enjoy
life as we know it now.”
To renew the pledge to remember
wartime sacrifices, the North Huron
Museum is offering school
programs for students from
kindergarten to Grade 12 about how
the World Wars affected this
area.
By touring through the special
military exhibit, as well as the
museum’s own military collection,
the students will have an
opportunity to learn about some of
the local people’s experiences
during both World Wars.
Two programs are offered. One
examines war from the point of view
of those who enlisted and left the
North Huron area.
The other program explores what
it was like to be left at home and
how the civilian population helped
with the war effort.
The museum is taking bookings
for the school programs for the
period of Oct. 17 - Nov. 11. The
program is one and a half hours in
length and costs $3 per student.
Program bookings and information
are available at 357-1096.
In addition to Hollenbeck’s
collection, other local military
items will be on loan to the museum
for the time before Remembrance
Day.
Roy Bennett has graciously
loaned the museum a collection of
his medals, military items,
correspondence and photographs.
Some of the museum's collection
will also be on display at the
Wingham and Area Seniors’ Day
Centre for the week before Nov. 11.
Curator, Jodi Jerome, will be
doing a presentation called Letters
Home at the Wingham and
Area Seniors' Day Centre on Nov. 8
for their clients.
The North Huron Museum is open
from Monday to Friday from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. for those who would
like to see the Remembrance Day
exhibit.
