Dog show people still not ‘happy campers9 says Nesbitt By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor North Huron clerk-administrator John Stewart got a bit of a surprise at Monday night’s meeting when he heard from two councillors that the resolution he had hoped was in the works may not be. Stewart had met with representative for the Bluewater dog show regarding an overlap of a few hours with the 2006 event and Campvention. Both groups need the facility on the Thursday. Stewart said, he was still waiting to hear back from the dog show reps, but he felt fairly optimistic at the end of the meeting that they were getting closer to a settlement. Councillor Murray Nesbitt, however, said that may not be the case. Both he and councillor Edgar Daer had been contacted by a Bly th resident who had been speaking with one of the dog show people and they are “apparently not happy campers yet.” To try and solve the problem Stewart said he has offered the dog show free camping and to close (Gypsy Lane) so they could set up in Lions Park. Daer wondered why this had happened. Stewart accepted full responsibility saying that there are often two groups using the grounds and with only 450 lots needed that day, out of 800 available sites, he thought, “this is no problem. It’s going to work.” Since then, however, he learned that both groups “proceed a certain way” and as a result want the same sites. “But we’re talking free camping,” said reeve Doug Layton. Stewart said the Campvention people have been “dealing in good faith. They are paying for the arena but are offering it to the dog show at no cost.” He also expressed frustration that he had to hear this from two councillors, who had heard from a third party, when he had been waiting for the dog show representatives to get back to him. “I don’t understand why they are dealing with other people in Blyth. I’ve been waiting a week.” Daer said he had been told that the dog show would leave if this isn’t worked out. Councillor Archie MacGowan to come to some understanding. John's done the best he can to negotiate. I don’t know what else he can do.” “I was optimistic after the meeting with the dog show representative,” said Stewart. “It's frustrating that people are calling other people in Blyth to talk about this rather than calling our office. It’s pitting neighbour against neighbour. It’s ridiculous.” Stewart noted that a lot of money in infrastructure has been spent on this with the idea that the revenue from Campvention would mean there would be no impact on tax dollars. Layton pointed out that there is a bigger picture not being looked at. “This is the only site in Ontario that is able to carry 800 trailers at one lime. This is going to be horrendous down the road.” Pouring it on Shirley Andrews was among the diners present for the Auburn Lions breakfast on Sunday morning. Proceeds were being donated to help the victims of Hurricane Kat ri n a. (Vicky Bremner photo) Stick With the Classifieds. If you’re shopping for something special, keep looking in the Classifieds. A spread sheet presented to council projects a spin off of $301,925 over six years. Council felt this was a modest estimate, however as the estimated dollar value to be spent in the community was $20 per day per trailer. “I’ve never gone anywhere for $20 a day,” said Layton. Daer wondered why Campvention couldn’t move to different sites. Stewart said that the ones that would be arriving on the Thursday were there to stgke out the areas by district and State. • “It seems to me like it should be a simple solution. But if we can’t come to an agreement, then it is going to come down to one group going. That seems foolish.” said Stewart. “It’s in both groups best interests Co-n^iatulatio-nA Derek Brandon winner of the I.PM. draw for a set of passenger car tires tM.G.M.
