PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo-Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 The village of Walton experienced both the joy of new life and the sadness of the passing of life. C. Martin Baan passed away peacefully at Seaforth hospital on Wednesday. He had celebrated his 91st on Sept. 14 and had been in hospital since then. We offer our deepest sympathies to his wife Catherine and children John and Mary Baan, Nellie and Howard Booker, Gerald and Doreen Baan On the run After a rain-delayed postponement from Sept. 26 students from the north Huron elementary schools competed in the annual cross country run at Grey Central Public School this past Monday. (Bonnie Gropp photo) and David and Dianne Baan and to his many grand and great­ grandchildren The joy of new life blessed the Baan family as well last week with the birth of Katie Meagan to Jason and Erin Baan. Grandparents are Dave and Dianne Baan. Several Walton ladies travelled to Kitchener to hear famous speaker Deepak Chopra. Reports from Patty Banks, Gloria Wilbee, Heidi McClure and her sister Hannah from Switzerland were very positive. Chopra is a spiritual philosopher, author, and motivational speaker from California. He likens human life to nature and spoke on how to live with your innerself. Jeanne Kirkby had guests for a day or so, with son Paul and friend Brian here to bowhunt. They were hoping for deer, but came up empty-handed. They did manage to treat Jeanne to bison burgers for lunch as a special surprise. The population of Walton grew by another one last week with the birth of Jillian Shortreed to Jim and Vai Shortreed. Big brothers Justin and Jordan, as well as sister Jaden are excited to have a new sister and make things even. Cavan United Church was the gathering place for the McCall and MacBain families for the christening of Alivia, daughter of John and Marcie McCall MacBain. Rev. Cathy Heard, cousin of John, from Owen Sound United Church conducted the service. Godparents of Alivia are Marion Hunt of Winthrop and Chris Ethel euchre winners The Ethel euchre was held on Monday, Sept. 26. Winners were: share-the-wealth, Mary Craig, Walter Seiler; high, Viola Adams, Richard Elliott; Ione hands, Judy Hahn, Ross Stephenson; low, Isabelle Craig, Joan Jacobs; lucky tally, Myrna Burnett, Walter Seiler, Verna Crawford, Mark Beaven, Helen Cullen, Frieda D’Arcy, Grace Stewart, Allan Edgar, Shirley Verstoep, June Jacklm, Jean Bedwell, Mary Craig, Adrian Verstoep, Bill Craig. The next euchre will be held on Monday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. Women are asked to bring lunch. Jorgenson, a friend of John’s. Special guests were great- grandparents Mary McCall and Orville and Lila Storey. The Cavan United Church women served a delicious turkey dinner to the families following the service. Celebrating birthdays last week were Steven Black. Lorren Poland. Don Fraser, Maryann Grobbink, W. Doug Mitchell, Campbell Wey, Helen Craig, Gerry Rijkhoff, Chris Blake, Melva Fraser, and Matthew Short reed. Congregation members were greeted by Leona McDonald on the Sunday of Worldwide Communion. Communion was served by Rev. Joan, Teresa Baan, Brian and Neil McGavin. Mr. Chuck Mallette from Habitat for Humanity Huron County will be speaking at the UCW meeting next Wednesday. The meeting is open to anyone interested in learning more about this program. Apple Day at Doon Heritage In celebration of the apple, Doon Heritage Crossroads will be holding Apple Harvest Day on Monday, Oct. 10 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. For decades, apples have been the mainstay of fruit-growing in Canada. At the turn of the century, many local farmers grew apples as a side crop for market and for their own use.
