WALTON

The village of Walton experienced
both the joy of new life and the
sadness of the passing of life.
C. Martin Baan passed away
peacefully at Seaforth hospital on
Wednesday. He had celebrated his
91st on Sept. 14 and had been in
hospital since then. We offer our
deepest sympathies to his wife
Catherine and children John and
Mary Baan, Nellie and Howard
Booker, Gerald and Doreen Baan
On the run
After a rain-delayed postponement from Sept. 26 students from the north Huron elementary
schools competed in the annual cross country run at Grey Central Public School this past
Monday. (Bonnie Gropp photo)

his many grand and great
grandchildren
The joy of new life blessed the
Baan family as well last week with
the birth of Katie Meagan to Jason
and Erin Baan. Grandparents are
Dave and Dianne Baan.
Several Walton ladies travelled to
Kitchener to hear famous speaker
Deepak Chopra. Reports from Patty
Banks, Gloria Wilbee, Heidi
McClure and her sister Hannah from
Switzerland were very positive.
Chopra is a spiritual philosopher,
author, and motivational speaker
from California. He likens human
life to nature and spoke on how to
live with your innerself.
Jeanne Kirkby had guests for a day
or so, with son Paul and friend Brian
here to bowhunt. They were hoping
for deer, but came up empty-handed.
They did manage to treat Jeanne to
bison burgers for lunch as a special
surprise.
The population of Walton grew by
another one last week with the birth
of Jillian Shortreed to Jim and Vai
Shortreed. Big brothers Justin and
Jordan, as well as sister Jaden are
excited to have a new sister and
make things even.
Cavan United Church was the
gathering place for the McCall and
MacBain families for the christening
of Alivia, daughter of John and
Marcie McCall MacBain. Rev.
Cathy Heard, cousin of John, from
Owen Sound United Church
conducted the service.
Godparents of Alivia are Marion
Hunt of Winthrop and Chris

Apple Day at Doon Heritage
In celebration of the apple, Doon
Heritage Crossroads will be holding
Apple Harvest Day on Monday, Oct.
10 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
For decades, apples have been the
mainstay of fruit-growing in
Canada. At the turn of the century,
many local farmers grew apples as a
side crop for market and for their
own use. At Doon Heritage
Crossroads, join in as the villagers
and farmers make apple butter, press
apple cider, make apple schnitz and
sample some heritage apple varieties
that were available at the turn of the
last century.
