Serving in style was Rev. Cathrine Campbell. (Bonnie Gropp photo) Lack of knowledge about the nutritional benefits of meat. fish, poultry, eggs and milk products may explain why Canadians are not consuming adequate amounts of these protein-rich foods. Concerned that a recent scientific study indicates that 40 per cent of women and 13 percent of men from British Columbia eat less than 100 grams daily from the meat and alternatives group of 'Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating’, dietitians commissioned an independent poll of nutrition knowledge. The poll of L000 Canadians this summer, by Synovate Research, suggests that many could benefit from a greater awareness of the important nutritional contributions of protein foods of animal origin. “The answers to the true and false questions certainly indicate .confusion,” says Susan Barr, professor of nutrition at the University of British Columbia. Although one-third agreed with the statement: 'Most Canadian women eat sufficient amounts of protein-rich foods daily’, 86 per cent incorrectly thought that people eat far more foods of animal origin such as meat, fish, eggs or dairy products, than they need. “The reality is that toa many Canadians could be jeopardizing their health by not eating enough meat, fish, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese or yogurt,” continues Barr. “In addition to high-quality protein, these foods are important sources of many essential nutrients, such as iron, zinc. calcium and many B vitamins.” It was evident from the survey that many Canadians need more nutrition information. Only 11 percent knew that meat has more ready-to-use iron than spinach and 69 per cent were unaware that egg yolk contains nutrients that reduce the risk of blindness. Two-thirds thought many fruits, vegetables and legumes are good sources of calcium when in fact, most foods of plant origin contain much less calcium than milk, have calcium that is less well absorbed than calcium in milk products, or both. When it comes to drinking milk or eating cheese or yogurt, Canadians are doing just as poorly. Eighty-five per cent of women and 70 per cent of men consume less than the recommended two servings of milk products daily. Misconceptions related to obesity and chronic diseases were also very evident from the survey. “We still have a long way to go in educating YOUR BREAST HEALTH Canadian Socidtd Cancer canadicnne Society du cancer BE AWARE Know your body. -Learn the risk factors. Some of the facts dietitians are anxious to communicate are: • Protein-rich foods of animal origin and calcium-rich milk products may help promote healthy weights. • Some of the fats in foods of animal origin - such as meat, eggs and fish - are good for you. • Dietary cholesterol is not a major contributing factor for heart disease. • Milk products may help reduce insulin resistance in overweight young people. • Health Canada does not support a health claim for reduction of fat and cancer because of lack of scientific evidence. “Our over-riding message is that all four food groups in Canada’s Food Guide to Health Eating, including meat and alternatives, are important for maintaining good health and reducing the risk of disease,” concludes Ban-.
