celebrate
On the weekend of Sept. 23-25
the members of Knox United
Church in Belgrave will celebrate
the 80th anniversary of their church
and the fourth year of their
Canadian Foodgrains Project by
focusing on world food aid and
development.
On Friday and Saturday, Sept. 23
and 24, the church will hold a sale
of flowers and garden produce with
the proceeds to be donated to the
Canadian Foodgrains Bank for
world food aid. As well, they will
be selling a selection of products
from the Ten Thousand Villages
organization. This sale will give
people in our area the chance to buy
a variety of garden produce as well
as a selection of unique, handmade
products while helping people in
developing countries meet basic
needs for themselves and their
families.
The sale will be held from 4-8
p.m. on Friday, and from 10 a.m. to
5 p.m. on Saturday. Shoppers are
invited to visit and discover a
selection of gifts, and home decor
items including traditional musical
instruments from Cameroon,
baskets from Vietnam, and toys
from Sri Lanka. There will also be a
selection of fall bulbs and flowers,
fall garden produce, and “fair
trade” coffee and teas.
Ten Thousand Villages is a non
profit organization that provides
vital, fair income to Third World
people by marketing their
handicrafts and telling their stories
in North America. Canadian
Foodgrains Bank is involved in the
global effort to end hunger. It
shares food with those who don’t
have access to sufficient food and it
supports the efforts of households
and communities to grow their own
food or earn sufficient income to
buy the food they need.
On Sunday, Sept. 25 at 11 a.m.,
Knox United in Belgrave will hold
a special anniversary church
service with Bill Andrews,
Professor Emeritus of
Environmental Science, University
of Toronto, as the guest speaker.
This will be followed by a Harvest
Celebration, at 2 p.m., featuring
lots of singing and special music to
celebrate the third year of growing
25 acres of corn for the Canadian
Foodgrains Bank with support from
members of Northlea United
Church, Toronto, and Knox United
Church, Belgrave, as well as the
labour and donations of local
individuals, farmers, and farm
supply companies.
