On Friday and Saturday, Sept. 23 and 24, the church will hold a sale of flowers and garden produce with the proceeds to be donated to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank for world food aid. As well, they will be selling a selection of products from the Ten Thousand Villages organization. This sale will give people in our area the chance to buy a variety of garden produce as well as a selection of unique, handmade products while helping people in developing countries meet basic needs for themselves and their families. The sale will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Shoppers are invited to visit and discover a selection of gifts, and home decor items including traditional musical instruments from Cameroon, baskets from Vietnam, and toys from Sri Lanka. There will also be a selection of fall bulbs and flowers, fall garden produce, and “fair trade” coffee and teas. Ten Thousand Villages is a non­ profit organization that provides vital, fair income to Third World people by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America. Canadian Foodgrains Bank is involved in the global effort to end hunger. It shares food with those who don’t have access to sufficient food and it supports the efforts of households and communities to grow their own food or earn sufficient income to buy the food they need. On Sunday, Sept. 25 at 11 a.m., Knox United in Belgrave will hold a special anniversary church service with Bill Andrews, Professor Emeritus of Environmental Science, University of Toronto, as the guest speaker. This will be followed by a Harvest Celebration, at 2 p.m., featuring lots of singing and special music to celebrate the third year of growing 25 acres of corn for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank with support from members of Northlea United Church, Toronto, and Knox United Church, Belgrave, as well as the labour and donations of local individuals, farmers, and farm supply companies.
