Part of
Drummond
gets name
change
By Bonnie Gropp
Citizen editor
II public opinion is in favour the
most easterly portion of Drummond
Street. Blyth will soon be re-named
for another village founder.
North Huron council at its
Monday night meeting passed a
motion to rename the street, as
requested by 911 to eliminate
overlap within the township, to
Kelly Street.
Input was received from several
residents for the renaming, one from
a local historian Janis Vodden. She
explained that Patrick Kelly was a
key figure in Blylh's early
development and the first reeve of
Blyth. Along with William
Drummond. Kelly worked to make
the village prosper and it was
through their joint leadership that
the LH&B railway came to Blyth.
Kelly, who defeated Drummond
tor reeve, had previously been the
first reeve of Morris Twp.
Like Drummond he started
several businesses.
Other suggestions included
(ireenway Street. Brechen Street, in
recognition ol the birthplace of the
Drummond family in Scotland.
Kcely Street, Placid Street and
Sunrise Drive.
Both Blyth ward councillors,
Edgar Daer and Murray Nesbitt
stated a preference for Kelly Street.
The name change will be
advertised for four weeks, after
which a public meeting will be held,
ihen a bylaw will be passed.
