The Citizen, 2005-05-19, Page 15THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 19, 2005. PAGE 15. PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo-Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 Congratulations to Chris and Lisa Stevenson on the birth of son Kyle. First-time grandparents are Jim and Evelyn Blake and they are very thrilled to have a baby boy in the family. For Grandma Bev Stevenson, it evens the count to two girls, two boys. The Walton Brewers played their home opener against the Brussels Tigers at Walton ball park Tuesday night. The Brewers had a good game defeating the Tigers 6-2. Larry Lowes pitched three good innings and hit a home run. Steve Leonhardt pitched the next three innings and Scott Leonhardt pitched the final inning and hit a single, double and homerun in the Brewers’ offence. Home games are Tuesday evenings at 8 p.m. The Walton Area Sports Club met at the ball park to ready the park for the year. Cleaning up, picking up and scrubbing makes for a job well done. Games will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, with Walton Brewers, Walton Indians and the Walton Wonders playing. Grass cutting will be looked after by Mark Wilbee and booking the park will be by Jo-Ann McDonald. The major fundraiser will be working the gate at the Walton Transcan in August. The basement of Duff’s United Church was beautifully decorated for the shower of bride-elect Shannon Craig. With over 90 in attendance, family and friends enjoyed the evening of games, singing and opening of the many beautiful gifts. A lovely lunch was served at the end of the evening. Our deepest sympathy is extended to Bev, Ron, Nicole, Chris and Lisa Stevenson and families on the loss of Betty McCall. A long-time Walton resident and former correspondent of Walton news, she will be missed by all her family and friends. The Becker family has returned from a wonderful trip to Florida. Ray, Janice, Christopher and Katelynn toured down through the States stopping along the way at various places, like the Grand Ole Opry. A trip to Florida means a visit to Disneyland, and Christopher reports having a really great time. They went on a robot race, enjoyed Space Mountain, Thunder Mountain and lots of other great rides. Other sites they saw on the way down to Florida included a mining tunnel in Kentucky, with lots of shale and state rocks, a dinosaur museum in Cave City, Kentucky, where they saw dinosaur teeth, bones, skulls, eggs, a fossilized turtle and they even dug for buried treasure. Through north Georgia they travelled through the beautiful mountain scenery where the mountains were higher than the clouds. On the way home they travelled through North Carolina National Park and saw an old mill and the Smokey mMountains. Friday the 13th was the motorcycle day in Port Dover. 1 saw lots of bikes on the road and local bikers were among the enthusiasts who took the trip. Rob and Brenda McIntosh, Blaine McCutcheon, Laura Saxon, Paul Ryan, Mike Devereaux and Don Nolan, just to name a few, braved the cool days’ ride. Cheryl Ryan and Faye Devereau enjoyed the warmth of a vehicle ride to join the men for the night away. Our wishes for a speedy recovery go out to both Jason Shortreed who is in hospital in Stratford and to Olene Dennis who has been in and released again from hospital. Get well soon. The Grade 8 class of Seaforth Public School celebrated graduation by going to Camp Celtic at Lions Head. They were away four days and Jamie Mitchell was among them. He reports having the best week of his life. The cabins and councillors were great. They spent their days doing lots of activities and games. Campfires were enjoyed before bedtime. A side trip was to Cypress Hills where they say the waves were higher than they’ve seen in six years. Weather wasn’t too bad and Jamie reports it was great. A two-day motocross event was held at Auburn Hills on the weekend. Judy Lee and Jo-Ann McDonald had their first camping experience of the year and it was cold and wet. Area boys racing included the Godkins - Mitchell, Lucas, Bruce, Brent and Scott, Chris Lee and experiencing his first race Greg Bowers. Birthday celebrants last week were: Edith Wey, Tracy Lee, Jim Cook, Shane Ryan, Cathy Melady, Jennifer McClure, Jeff Grobbink, Joyce Williamson, Ryan Butler, Jason Pennington, June Williamson, Dwayne Pryce, Wendy Glauser, Justin Beisinger, Gavin Bowers, Barb Fritz, Andrea Shortreed. Luann Bennett, Ron Strome. Jim and Marcia Campbell, Meagan and Matthew greeted members of Duff’s United Church, Walton on Sunday morning. Rev. Joan Tuchlinsky led the service of Pentecost. The scripture reader was Phyllis Mitchell. Rev. Joan’s reflection was entitled Spirit of the Living God. A secretary is still needed for the Walton-Bluevale pastoral charge. Contact a member of the ministry and personnel committee. The church is still offering PAR (preauthorized remittance) for your regular church givings. Give Glenda Morrison a call for information. The junior choir, under Brian Black’s direction, attended the Mennonite Church on Sunday to perform the musical Don’t Rock the Ark. Male singers are needed for the Father’s Day choir. Call Brian Black for information. Break-in at variety store Huron OPP, on May 12 at 2:45 a.m., were alerted to a break-in at a convenience store in Molesworth. A man delivering newspapers found the front door to Molesworth Convenience Store smashed out. The store located on County Rd. 86 between Wingham and Listowel was entered and a large amount of cigarettes, DVDs and candy were stolen. Officers are working on the case and believe it to be part of three break-ins that took place that night between midnight and 3 a.m. The other break-ins took place at the Beer Store in Wingham and another convenience store in Listowel. In two of the break-ins canine and emergency response officers were called and a search was conducted turning up no clues. If you can help solve any of these crimes call the local police agency in your area or notify Crime Stoppers at l-800-222-8477(TIPS).
