Just desserts

the wonderful aroma of home-baking on Saturday during a

Guild
meets
The Melville Women's Guild
long-standing tradition of the
Springtime Supper will be
continued this year when it is
offered on April 24 from 4:30 - 7
p.m.
The proceeds from this go to the
work of the Melville Presbyterian
Church. The supper offers a meal of
turkey, ham, salads, vegetables and,
of course, homemade pies and
cakes. The meal is the result of a
collaboration of many in the
congregation and provides not only
food but a time of enjoyable
fellowship.
There is a conscious effort to keep
the cost of the meal affordable. The
ticket prices are: adults, $10;
children, six - 12, $5; five years and
under, free.

Goderich plans VE celebration
Goderich is getting ready to thank
Canada’s veterans for the liberation
of Europe almost 60 years ago. The
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 109
is hosting two major events in May in
honour of the 60th anniversary of
Victory in Europe (VE Day) and the
liberation of Holland and the Year of
the Veteran in Canada.
The Legion is first hosting an event
for Goderich and area veterans on
May 8, the 60th anniversary of the
allied forces’ liberation of Europe on
VE Day.
The Legion, in co-operation with
The Dutch Liberation Diamond
Celebration Committee in Goderich,
are then joining to host celebrations
this May 14-15 to honour all
Canadian veterans for their role in the
liberation of Holland and the rest of
Europe at the end of the Second
World War.
Invitations to the May 14-15 events
have been sent out to Legion
branches across the country.
Former soldiers who have
confirmed their intentions to attend
represent veterans of Bomber
Command, Dieppe, HMCS Haida,
the Far East, the Italian and
Normandy campaigns, Canada’s
Merchant Navy, #422 Squadron
Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF),
Canadian Army, Canadian Navy and
more.
Royal Canadian Legion Branch
109, Goderich, is hoping to track
down all Goderich and area veterans
prior to the May events. If you are a
veteran, but not a member of the local
Legion, you are asked to contact Jim
Rutledge at (519) 524-2605 or Barry
Hastings at 440-7626.
Veterans are asked to pre-register
by telephone, letter, or e-mail and
pick up information packages at
Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 109.
A new website has been created to
provide information about
celebrations this May in Goderich to
honour the 60th anniversary of VE
Day (Victory in Europe) at the end of
the Second World War.
For information on this year’s
celebrations visit
www.victory.typepad.com
The following are brief lists of
some of the events planned for this
year’s celebrations of Victory in
Europe Day, the Year of the Veteran
and the 60th anniversary of the
liberation of Holland and the rest of
Europe, at the end of the Second
World War:
The Windsor Military Band is
coming to Goderich for the Royal
Canadian Legion Branch 109’s 60th
anniversary of V. E. Day event on
Sunday, May 8 to honour Goderich
and area veterans.
There will be a parade with colours
from the Royal Canadian Legion to
the cenotaph at Courthouse Park,
where a short service will be held.
There will then be a reception for
local veterans at the Huron County
Museum on North Street.
There will be a concert on The
Square featuring different bands
(tentatively the Goderich Laketown
Band, the Celtic Blue Highlanders
and the Windsor Military Band) and a
sit-down roast beef dinner at the
Legion at 5 p.m.
That local day coincides exactly
with the 60th anniversary of VE Day.
The May 14-15 events in Goderich,
to remember the contribution of
Canadian veterans to the liberation of
Holland and the rest of Europe during
the Second World War, will include a
parade featuring any veterans who are
able to take part.
There will be military bands
including the London and Welland
Regimental Band, the Seventh
Toronto Regiment Royal Canadian
Artillery (RCA) band, the Queen’s
York Rangers Corps of Drums and
more.

on display.
Knox Presbyterian Church will be
hosting the veterans for dinners of
turkey, roast beef and pork, prepared
by members of Maple Leaf Chapter
IODE and volunteers from Knox.
Also contributing to the cooking
will be the Goderich Lions Club and
their large barbecue.
• The VE Day celebration in
Goderich will include a Saturday-
aftemoon parade that promises to be
one of the biggest this area has ever
seen.
It will feature those veterans who
can participate as well as many
displays of Dutch culture.
• Unveiling of a permanent
memorial and dedication of a plaque
by the Dutch Liberation Diamond
Celebration committee of the Dutch-
Canadian community in Goderich
and area.
• There will be a concert in
Courthouse Park on The Square,
tentatively featuring the 7th Toronto
