Stewart leads Ironmen to 3-2 series lead over Shamrocks
The Wingham Ironmen hold a 3-2 lead in
their OHA Junior C provincial playdown
series with the Erin Shamrocks, after scoring a
hard-fought 5-3 decision at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex on Sunday
evening.
Going into Sunday evening’s contest. Cole
Stewart of Blyth was leading the team in
scoring on four goals and 15 assists for 19
points. He added a pair of assists in the game,
helping out Zack O’Krafka on the first two
Ironmen markers to increase his point
production to 21.
Brussels’ Joel Hemingway had two goals
and an assist going into the contest and earned
an assist on Shawn Walker’s empty-net
insurance marker with 19 seconds remaining
on the clock.
While the Ironmen have won all three home
games in the series, they have trouble scoring
- let along winning — in Erin. The Ironmen
have lost 3-0 and 4-0 in Erin.
Following Sunday’s victory, defenceman
Hemingway said the Shamrocks are playing
the Ironmen hard.
“They’ve played us hard each game of the
series,” he said. “For us to win, we have to
play tougher than them.”
Hemingway said he was concerned in the
third period, when the Ironmen held a 4-2 lead
and took back-to-back penalties to be two-men
short for 1:17.
“We gave up one short-handed goal, but we
didn’t let them tie the game,” he said.
According to Hemingway, in order for the
Ironmen to win the series, they have to be
more disciplined and get the puck out of their
zone quicker.
Stewart believes the Ironmen can score
goals in Erin, but they have to work a little
harder.
He indicated the Ironmen were not lucky
around the net in the two previous games in
Erin, but added the Shamrocks were working a
little harder than the Ironmen.
“We can beat them if we get the puck deep
on them and beat them up high,” he said.
O’Krafka and Walker had two goals apiece
for the Ironmen, with Luke Williams chipping
in with one. O’Krafka also earned an assist,
with single helpers also going to Joel Riley,
Justin Russell, Matt MacPhee and Ryan Fry.
Cody Richardson, Troy Ethier and Zac
Duerden replied for the Shamrocks.
The Ironmen took a 2-1 lead in the series on
March 30, with a 4-2 win at the complex.
Getting the markers for the Ironmen were
Jamie Chester from Walker and Nick Fiisinger,
Devin McGuire unassisted, Fry from
MacPhee, and Russell into an empty net.
Game six in the series was played y\.pril 5 in
Erin and game seven, if necessary, was played
last night, Wednesday, in Wingham.
Bantam girls compete in year-end tourney
The Brussels Bantam Girls participated in their year-
end tournament this past weekend. Even though Brussels
finished the season fourth out of 21 teams for the WOAA
Bantam Division, they, like everyone else, had to start
fresh with a qualifying game.
Brussels faced Teeswater/Belmore on Tuesday, March
29 in Wingham. The first period was scoreless but
Brussels finally found the back of the
Teeswater/Belmore net with an unassisted goal by Jory
Uyl late in the second.
Teeswater/Belmore tied it up with two minutes and 50
seconds left in the game. After one five minute sudden
death period, the score was still tied.
The girls then played one minute five on five, then one
minute four on four, one minute three on three, one
minute two on two and finally one minute of one-on-one
play. The score was still tied.
This began another period of removing a player one
minute at a time. With 35.3 seconds left in the third
period of overtime Teeswater/Belmore pulled their
goalie to make it two on one and finally put one by
Brussels goalie Brianne Wheeler to win 2-1. This put
Brussels on the consolation side of the tournament.
Wheeler played a great game with the
Teeswater/Belmore coaching staff commenting on how
many times she robbed them of scoring.
Brussels played Howick/Wallace on Saturday, April 2
in Southampton. Brussels was on the scoreboard late in
the first with a goal by Colleen Aitchison, assisted by
Morgan Deitner and Ashley Sholdice. Brussels made it
2-0 in the second with an unassisted goal by Kristen
McArter.
Howick/Wallace scored with four minutes left in the
second to make it 2-1. Brussels was able to hang onto the
lead and headed to the semi-final game on Sunday in
Port Elgin.
This contest saw Brussels facing off against a strong
Kincardine B team. Kincardine started the scoring early
in the first.
Brussels showed Kincardine they were there to play
hockey however with a goal by Jodi McIntosh, assisted
by Deitner.
The second period would remain scoreless but
Brussels took the lead early in the third period with an
unassisted wrap-around goal from Uyl. Unfortunately
with 17.2 seconds left in the game Kincardine beat a
screened Wheeler to tie up the game.
After a five-minute period of sudden death the score
remained tied. After removing a player a minute at a time
it was one on one and Kincardine popped one in to make
it 3-2.
It was a nerve-racking, heartbreaking game for
spectators, parents and the girls.
Despite this Brussels enjoyed a good year finishing the
regular season first in their division and fourth overall. It
was a season to be proud of and a season to remember.
Blyth Senior Tykes conclude solid season
Well doneThe Blyth Sr. Tykes capped a solid hockey season as A
runners-up following the year-end tournament.
The squad played Brussels in the first match-up and
edged their opponents 5-4. Blyth goals were scored by
Curtis Raynard, two; Josh Van Soest, Dustin Pennington
and Mackenzie Nesbitt. Assists went to Pennington and
Raynard.
Fending off the Brussels attackers in goal was Dalton
Carey.
Game two was a commanding victory against Elma-
Logan. Shutting down the competition, the team came
through offensively with seven goals.
Autumn Wightman handed off to Pennington, who set
up the play for Dylan Walton to score early in the game.
Walton then returned the favour with a hand-off to
Pennington who slipped it to Cory Ducharme for goal
two. Ducharme got his second of the game five minutes
later. Assists were creditted to Raynard and Brendan
Hallahan. Just two minutes later Pennington skated in to
score, after Wightman and Connor Rodger set up the
play. Then with just over a minute left, Pennington added
yet one more to the Blyth tally. Rodger and VanSoest
assisted.
In the second period VanSoest came through with an
unassisted effort just minutes into play. Raynard scored
the last goal, unassisted in this 7-0 victory.
Enjoying a quiet game between the pipes was Carey.
The two wins put Blyth in the finals against Seaforth.
Despite stellar work, the team was edged out of the
championship by a score of 3-1. Pennington, with an
assist from Nesbitt scored the lone Blyth goal.
Despite the loss, it was a productive game for Carey,
whose grandfather promised him $1 for every save he
made. His efforts earned him $26.
Brian Burgess of the Brussels Skating Club is congratulated
by his coach Michelle Blake on success achieving the Level
6 Gold Power Skating Award. He is the fifth Brussels skater
