Crusaders swept by Spitfires By Jim Brown Citizen staff' The Brussels Crusaders were swept aside in two straight games by the Wingham Stainton Spitfires on the weekend. After succumbing to the Spitfires 7-4 on Friday evening, in a game played at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre in game one of the best two-of- three mini-series, the Crusaders were thumped 10-0 at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex on Saturday. The Spitfires now play the second-place Tavistock Royals in a best-of-five preliminary round. The winner of the series advances to the AA playoffs, with the losers competing in the A playoffs. Nothing seemed to go right for the Crusaders on Saturday, as the Spitfires scored twice in the opening minute of period one. Ryan Hennessey started in goal for the Crusaders, but was replaced by Rob Warwick when the score reached 3- 0 in less than five minutes of play. The Spitfires went on to take a 6-0 lead after 20 minutes of play and added two goals in each of the second and third periods to reach the double digit mark. Corey Hayter had three goals for Wingham, with Ryan WOAA SENIOR HOCKEY February 7 Swept After putting up a good fight Friday evening in game one of their best two of three series with the Wingham Spitfires, the Brussels Crusaders offered little resistance on Saturday as they fell 10-0 in a game played at the North Huron Wescast Community Centre. (Jim Brown photo) Ironmen clinch top spot The Wingham Ironmen clinched first place in the Western Junior C Hockey League this past Friday evening, with a 4-1 decision against the tough Kincardine Bulldogs at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex. But, it was not the typical Wingham-Kincardine match-up. Four fights took place in the third period, including three in a span of eight seconds late in the period, with the game already out of reach. Going into the weekend, the Ironmen just needed a single point to claim first-place honours in the league for the second consecutive season. They added to their first-place lead on Sunday with a 3-2 decision over the Goderich Sailors. Ironmen defenceman Joel Hemingway of Brussels, a combatant in one of the late third-period fights, said following the contest he was expecting a close, one-goal game from the Bulldogs. Both Hemingway and Cole Stewart of Blyth said the victory was a total team effort. Ironmen scoring leader Stewart, was held pointless in the game, but stated, “the team comes first.” Stewart said a game like this against Kincardine this late in the season brings the team together. “We are getting ready for the playoffs,” he stated. He indicated that he was expecting this kind of game from the Bulldogs. “This was a team effort, and doing well in the playoffs is all that matters,” said Stewart. Although he is mainly playing as a forward this season, he has also played a tew shifts as a defenceman. One of those times was Friday, as he had to play the penalty kill when both Hemingway and Matt McCann were sitting in the penalty box. “1 can play a little defence, when we get a little short,” he said. Hemingway said he has been in a number of altercations this season. “1 was trying to prove to them that they can’t hurt us,” he said. The Ironmen blueliner said everyone played well, coming up with a solid team effort. Hemingway earned an assist on the second Ironmen marker, scored by Matt Hill. After a scoreless first period, the Ironmen struck for two goals in the middle frame, Nick Filsinger from Travis Fowlie and Hill from Hemingway. A pair of third-period goals by Shawn Walker, 25 seconds apart, gave the Ironmen a 4-0 lead. Devin McGuire and Justin Russell helped out on Walker’s first goal. Netminder Kurt Edwards lost his shutout bid with just over seven minutes remaining, as Brian Stanley scored on the power play. Stewart gave the Ironmen a one-goal lead in the first period of Sunday afternoon’s contest in Goderich. Chris Stanley and Fowlie earned the assists. Matt MacPhee scored in the second period, from Filsinger and Walker and Zack O’Krafka netted the winner with 4:30 remaining in regulation time. Walker and Joel Riley assisted on the powerplay marker. Chad Gooyers and Brendan Dale replied for the Sailors. TIE BREAKERS: Tavistock/Shelburne more wins than Hensall/Clinton Tavistock awarded second over Shelburne based on head-to-head meeting. Inglis and Wingham’s Brad Robinson were also tagged for fighting majors. Inglis also received a game misconduct. Friday’s game in Brussels was much better, with the teams deadlocked at one after the first period and tied at four after 40 minutes of play.
