Bantam Bulldogs win quarter
finals, play Tiverton in semis
The Blyth Bantam Bulldogs fought back from a two-game deficit to win
their quarter-final series against Wallace.
The series began in Blyth on Monday, Jan. 17. Although the Bulldogs
played well they, were unable to match their Wallace opponents and lost 6-2.
Scoring for Blyth were Tony Bean and Derek Youngblut. Earning assists
were Brandon Gibson, Kenny Plunkett and Brad Greidanus.
Game two was played on Friday, Jan. 21 at Wallace. Again the Bulldogs
played well but in the end Jost 5-4. Scoring for Blyth were Youngblut, Lee
Watkins, Gibson and Johnathon McDowell. Assists were earned by
McDowell, Youngblut and Brett Courtney.
Trailing two games to zero in the best-three-of-five series, the Bulldogs
returned to home ice on Monday, Jan. 24. In this must-win situation, our
dogs skated like they had never before and were able to defeat the Wallace
team, 8-1. Scoring for Blyth were McDowell (three), Curtis Robertson,
Youngblut, Greidanus, Gibson and Mat Stevenson. Earning assists were
McDowell, Robertson, Youngblut, Bean, Gibson, Plunkett and Jordan Smith.
Game four, another must-win game for Blyth, was played on Friday, Jan.
28 in Blyth and the hometown fans were not disappointed as the Bulldogs
defeated Wallace 6-5.
Scoring for Blyth were Robertson (three), McDowell (two) and Youngblut.
Assists went to Greidanus, Smith. Stevenson and Roman Sturzenegger.
With the series tied, two games to two, the Bantam Bulldogs returned to
Wallace on Sunday, Jan. 30 for game five. Determined to capture the series
and extend their winning streak the Dogs skated hard throughout the game.
In the end. Blyth defeated Wallace 5-3 to win the series three games to two.
Scoring for Blyth were Captain McDowell with four goals and Gibson.
Robertson and Courtney earned assists.
Minding the net for the series were Derek Mitchell and ‘Shiny’ Sean Cook.
Playing defence for the Bulldogs was Thomas LeComte.
Now it is on to Tiverton to play the WOAA semi-finals.
This past weekend, the Brussels Tykes played a pair of
games. On Saturday, the Tykes hosted BCH. In front of
a large home crowd the squad did not disappoint.
Midway through the first period, Mitch Kellington put
the home side up 1-0 on an unassisted marker.
Early in the second, Dawson Peachey put the Tykes up
by two. Assisting on Peachey’s first goal of the year
were Colton Hastings and Kellington.
Before the second was over. BCH would net its only
goal.
The third period would see the Tykes keep up on the
pressure, but be unable to net an insurance marker. In the
end they still skated away with a 2-1 win.
On Sunday the Tykes travelled to Listowel for an
afternoon matinee. Midway through the first period, Kai
Hiemstra would put the visitors on the scoreboard.
Assisting on the goal were Jason Baxter and Hastings.
A couple of minutes later. Wyatt Ducharme scored
Brussels second goal of the game. Assists went to Ben
Hruska and Peachey.
Early in the second Listowel would cut the lead in
half. Hiemstra would then net his second to restore the
two-goal lead with assists going to Logan Clark and
Scott Dolmage. Tim Waechter, on a nice end-to-end
rush, scored Brussels’ fourth goal with assists going to
Scott Baan and Matt McNichol.
Late in the game, Ducharme would score Brussels’
fifth goal with an assist going to Kellington. The final
score was 5-1 Brussels.
McNichol played goal in both games and did a great
job.
Brussels sees action this weekend with pair of home
games, Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Milverton and
Saturday at 10 a.m. against Zurich.
Atom girls play well
The Blyth atom Girls hockey team headed to Walkerton on Saturday and
had another great time.
Lauren Cronin. Rebecca Chalmers and Mikayla Middegaal practised their
passing skills, while Laura Higgins and Jeanette Plaetzer worked hard on
defence. Courtney Middegaal, Kelsey Kerr and Shelsie Popp kept the play
moving in the light direction. Justine Reid and Chloe Middegaal helped out
on defence, giving the goalie some assistance.
Jessie Walton had another great
game in net.

better showing than the previous
score against the Walkerton team one
of the best in the league.

Local League Atoms kept busy
The Blyth Atom Local League team has been very busy recently.
On Tuesday. Feb. 1, they traveled to Bayfield to play BCH. Steven Ellis collected a hattrick, scoring three of
Blyth’s goals. Two were unassisted, while on the third goal the assist went to Cody K. Heidi Raynard collected the
fourth goal for Blyth. She was assisted by Caroline McDowell and Jason Meier.
Goalie Kennan MacDonald enjoyed a shutout game with the final score being 4-0 for Blyth.
On Thursday, Feb. 3, Blyth hosted Kincardine II. Raynard was strong in
net, not allowing any goals to be scored in the first period.
Ellis started the scoring for Blyth in the second period with an unassisted
goal. Kincardine also scored in the second. Ellis scored again in the third
period, with an assist from Meier and Ronnie Vercruyssen. With just over one
minute remaining McDowell and Alisha Middegaal sent the puck to Ellis to
give Blyth the winning goal. The final score was 3-2 for Blyth.
On Saturday, Feb. 5 Blyth traveled to Tiverton to play Kincardine I.
Despite a valiant effort by all members of the team the final score was 9-0 for
Kincardine.
On Sunday, Feb. 6 Blyth headed to Lucknow. Despite having only eight
skaters the team put forth a tremendous effort.
MacDonald was solid in net.
Early in the second period, after a scoreless first, the home team managed
to score two goals. However, Blyth quickly responded. Ellis, assisted by
Caroline McDowell, managed to put one up on the board for Blyth.
Lucknow scored again; but Cody K. put one in the net for Blyth. The assist
went to Raynard. With only 27 seconds remaining in the period Ellis popped
one between the pipes.
Blyth started the third period off very strong with Cody K. and Ellis each
scoring unassisted. This gave Blyth a lead of 5-3. Unfortunately, late in the
period Lucknow managed to sneak two goals in. The final score was 5-5.
Wes Thompson, Laura Higgins, Vercruyssen and Meier also were strong in
their positions for this very close game.
