THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2006. Sports Blyth Tyke Is played the Blyth Tyke H team this week and came out with a 10-3 victory to continue their undefeated record. Cody Treble and Brendan Howson each had three goals and one assist. Chad Treble had three goals, Men's night at the Wingham Curling Club saw six teams with the addition of a team from the high school. There were two close games as Bruce Robertson edged John Nixon in a high scoring 10-9 game and Barry Simpson was a 6-5 winner over Stewart Leedham. The high school boys got a real initiation into curling as they were on the short end of a 10-4 score. *** In the Tuesday competitive league it was a battle of the DeVos brothers. Bill beat brother Aart 7-6. Shawn Cottrill was a giant killer as he downed Belmore's Earl Fitch 9-4. Don Edgar continued to rack up the wins with a 9-2 victory over Rob Middleton and in the fourth game Calvin Ruttan downed Russ Taylor. *** In the Wednesday mixed league John Dailleboust racked up his fourth win in a row with a 7-6 victory over Leanne Elston. Other games ended: Steve Burke, 11; Dean Newson, 3; Wayne Horton, 8; Tammy Adams, 1 and Aart DeVos, 9; Earl Fitch 5. *** In Thursday's mixed league both Samantha Kerr one goal and Damon Allen three -assists. Other assists were credited to Morgan Howson, Craig Raynard, Parker Gibbings and Brock Weber. Blyth's defence once again played the line well. It was not until later in McDonalds were winners as Bill McDonald won 13-5 over Kayla Bishop and Cole McDonald upended Cam Alton 9-7. One Miller won and one lost as Doug Miller defeated Mike Cottrill 9-4 and Elliott Miller lost 11-6 to Kevin Bishop. *** In the Belgrave league the Johnstons met head on with Dave a 9-6 victor over Larry Johnston. Kevin Scott had great rock control with an 11-3 win over Tim Coultes. In other games it was Mike Metske 9, Todd Edgar 1, and Larry Robinson, 6, Rob Sinclair 3. *** Both games on Friday night ended with identical scores. The results were: Shawn Cottrill, 5, Lynn Hickey, 3 and Wayne Waechter, 5, Chris Cottrill, 3. *** In the daytime league on Monday it was Lloyd Wheeler, 10; Wendall Stamper, 4; Irvin Elliott, 6; Norm Fairies, 5; Nelson Frank, 10; Ron McMichael, 5 and Les Shaw was pushed to an extra end to keep his winning streak in tact as he won an extra end 5-4 victory over John Mann. the game that the other Blyth squad was able to get through the defence- and beat Frankie `.`The Red Hot" Marshall between the pipes. Blyth continues to play through the Christmas season. Check the schedule posted at the arena. Mac Inglis beat Bruce Robertson 9-5 and Jim Coultes lost a close one to Ivan Dow 9-8. On ice three Bill Deans and Stewart Leedham had a real battle with all eight curlers playing to top performances. As former master of the curling rings Ken McKague put it "That's the best curling I have seen for a long time." When the last rock rolled to a stop it was an 11-8 victory for Bill Deans. *** In Thursday daytime action it was Christmas dinner day and curling with a full house in attendance. In morning action there were three one-sided games: John Mann, 10; Ron McMichael, 4; Wendell Stamper, 10; Bruce Robertson, 3 and the upset of the day as Irving Elliott gave Les Shaw his first loss of the season winning 10-2 to end Les's 10-game winning streak. Afternoon action saw six teams hit the ice full after a great Christmas dinner and play suffered. Results were Mac Inglis, 9; Lloyd Wheeler, 4; Bill Deans, 11; Jim Coultes, 4 and Stewart Leedham, 11; Norm Fairies, 6. Sunday night, the Huron Perth Major Midget Lakers hosted the league's top-ranked team, the Waterloo Wolves, in Goderich. The Lakers were coming off an impressive 9-0 victory, the previous night, against the Chatham Kent Cyclones and were looking to improve upon their previous result against the Wolves, however lost 5-2 in Waterloo in October. The Midgets were able to improve their effort, but still came up short, losing 3-2 in a very tight game. Waterloo scored the only goal of the first, with each team trading goals in both the second and third periods. Tyler Masson scored both goals for the home team. Kurtis Bartliff and Scott Miller picked up assists in the contest. On Saturday night in Bothwell the Lakers were coming off a 19-day layoff and were hungry to play. The game also marked the return of J.J. Sparling, Andrew Van Vliet, Jared Carr, and Lorenz Guntsenperger, who had all been out since early November with injuries. The team exploded for six goals in the first period and cruised to a 9-0 victory. Goals were scored by Masson (two), Chris Holmes (two), Mark Chaput, Colin Thompson, Sparling, Guntensperger, and Bartliff. ' - Assists went to Bartliff (two), "Spading (two), Mark Hazeleger (two). Groenestege turned away all of the shots he saw in goal to earn the shutout. The Major Midgets record now stands at 14 wins, six losses and one tie. They are third in the Alliance League and second in the West Division, behind the London Jr. Knights. The team is ranked 33rd in Canada and 15th in the province. The Lakers played the Jr. Knights Wednesday at 7 p.m. and take them on again Saturday at 5 p.m. Both games are at Medway Arena in London. The team is also in the Wexford Major Midget Showcase Tournament Dec. 26-28, in Scarborough.
