Brussels students on the lookout for fairness

In the past month at Brussels
Public School the students and staff
have been discussing and practising
the attribute of fairness. I asked the
Grade 3 class to keep an eye on the
adults in their community. The
Grade 3s had no trouble finding
grownups who demonstrated
fairness to others. Hopefully the
influence of each adult's action and
words will be brought to light. It
truly takes a village to raise a child
and we, as, teachers, know that
character education needs to be a
communal effort.
I saw my senses from Wingham

Ontario fire marshal urges caution this holiday season • • • • •
Ontario's new fire marshal is
urging families to be especially
vigilant about fire safety over the
holiday season, which is one of the
deadliest times of the year for home
fires.
"This is a very busy time for many
people and it's easy to get distracted
or forgetful," said Fire Marshal
Patrick Burke. "All it takes is for. a
pot to be left on the stove, or a
candle left burning unattended, and
a family's holiday celebrations can
go up in smoke. People really need
to pay attention to potential fire
hazards in their homes."
Cooking, smoking, candles and
heaters can all present fire risks and
need to be monitored.
"I would also like to remind
everyone about the law • requiring
working smoke alarms on every
storey and outside all sleeping
areas," continued Burke. "Take a
few minutes to test your smoke
alarms and install new batteries, if
needed."
Between Nov. 1, 2005 and Jan. 31,
2006, 24 Ontarians lost their lives in
preventable home fires. Research
indicates that over 90 per cent of
residential fires are preventable.
Enjoy a fire safe holiday season by

The Saugeen Maitland Lightning
PeeWee girls has been busy over the
past two weekends.
They were in Whitby for a
tournament Dec. 1 - 3 making it to
the semi-finals before losing 2-1 to
Windsor. The -highlight of the
tournament was the goaltending of
Kortney Watson who posted a GAA
of 1.25 over the four games
including a shutout against Ottawa
to get the team into the semi-finals.
On Dec. 9 the team was back in
league play with two home games
against Chatham. The PeeWees won
both with scores of 3-1 and 8-5 to
maintain first place in their league
division.
Dec. 16 and 17 has the girls
playing two games at home against
Windsor and two away at Bluewater.
They hope to reverse the table on
Windsor after the tournament loss.
