At the Branch
Dominion president attends 75th party
By Jo-Ann McDonald
It's been a wonderful week at the
Brussels Legion Branch.
The 75th anniversary banquet was
held on Saturday evening with over
75 people in attendance. The
evening began with Pipe Major Don
Martin piping in the head table.
President Jo-Ann McDonald
conducted the opening ceremonies
with Sergeant-At-Arms Lisa
Glanville and two senior cadets
marching in the colours. The toast to
the Queen was given by Comrade
Glenn Bridge and the toast to the
fallen comrades was given by
Comrade Charles Procter.
Padre Tom Wilson gave the
blessing prior to the dinner prepared
by the Brussels Cadet Corps and
Parent Support Committee.
Comrade Allyson Cardiff expressed
the Branch's appreciation to the
Corps for an excellent job.
The Master of Ceremonies for the
evening was Comrade Eric Ross. He
introduced the head table, then the
guest speaker, Dominion President
of the Royal Canadian Legion
Comrade Jack Frost. His presence
was truly an honour for the Branch.
Comrade Frost was elected to the
position of president this past June at
the Dominion convention held in
Edmonton, Alberta. Comrade Frost
spoke on comradeship, volunteerism
and the importance of each within a
Branch.
Comrade Jack and his wife Lynn
were presented with gifts from the
Branch by Comrades Rick and Jo-
Ann McDonald.
Greetings and congratulations
were expressed by District C
Commander Bob Silverton, Zone C-
1 Commander Shirley Chalmers,
mayor of Huron East Joe Seili and
mayor of Morris-Turnberry Dorothy
Kelly. Letters of congratulations
were read from MPP Carol Mitchell
and MP Paul Steckle.
Comrade Nicole Lowe introduced
the past presidents of Branch 218.
There were 10 out of 11 surviving
presidents on hand. A group picture
was taken.
The highlight of the evening was
the surprise presentations of the
Meritorious Service Awards to
Comrade Ross and Marg Bennett.
This is the highest award a Comrade
can receive in the Royal Canadian
Legion and is presented to Comrades
who have shown a true dedication to
the service of the Royal Canadian
Legion. Ross and Marg's children,
Nanci, with daughter Danielle, and
son Peter with wife LuAnn and
daughter Emilee were on hand to
observe the presentations. The
presentation of an engraved plaque
was made to the Bennetts by the
Dominion president. District
Commander Bob Silverton
presented a framed certificate, Zone
Commander Shirley Chalmers' gave
them the meritorious service medal
and President Comrade Jo-Ann
McDonald presented the card and
service pin.
Comrade Ross Bennett gave his
remarks and thanks to his fellow
Comrades.
President McDonald made her

remarks as did chairman of the
evening Eric Ross. Closing

Comrade Jo-Ann McDonald.
A social time was enjoyed to finish
the evening and a wonderful evening
it was.
During the week the regular events
took place with Cadets meeting on
Monday and Tuesday evening. The
executive met on Tuesday evening as
did the anniversary committee.
The Executive of the Tri County
pipe bands also met in the lounge on
Tuesday evening.
Thursday night darts saw 10
darters taking aim at the boards. The
first-place team was Heather Little,
Harry Smith and John Harrison. In
second were Marlene Little, Bush
Whittard and Sharon Robbins.
The high men's start was by Gord
Jacklin, shooting 76, and the ladies
was by Sandra Josling shooting 100.
The high shot of the night was by
Heather Little who shot 140.
The Friday night supper of
sausage and sauerkraut was enjoyed
by a nice crowd. This week is beef
stew.
The Santa Claus parade was
wonderful on Saturday with a great
variety of floats. The Legion had a
float and Comrade Sandra Josling,
Catrina Josling, Cadet James Dillon
and Christopher Ross participated in
the parade with the Legiontloat.
The Legion has a drop-off box for
the Huron County Christmas
Bureau. Donations of new items are
gratefully accepted.
Happy birthday to Lawrence
Machan. A surprise 50th birthday
party was held in the lounge on
Saturday evening by his family and
friends.
