Nov. 26 marked the end of
Pentecost in the Christian calendar.
The past 25 weeks had concentrated
on the the life and work of Christ.
At Londesborough United
Church, Rev. Pat Cook noted that it
was called Christ the King Sunday.
During their time at the front, the
boys and girls shared their thoughts
on what they thought being a king or
queen meant. Then Rev. Pat told
them that Jesus was referred to as a
leader or king. But Jesus was born
into humble surroundings and lived
His life among the common people
teaching and healing, not as royalty
with fancy homes and money.
Rev. Pat encouraged the children
to live as Christ did, kind and loving.
The Faithful Witness was the title
of Rev. Cook's message to the adults
and her supporting gospel scripture
was John 18: 33-37. That passage
was the trial of Jesus before Pilate.
With all of his power, Pilate was
Alzheimer disease is a
progressive, degenerative disease of
the brain that eventually affects all
aspects of a person's life. In the next
20 years the number of cases of the
disease worldwide is expected to
double. In Huron County today,
almost 10 per cent of those over 65
suffer from Alzheimer's or a related
dementia.
The mission of the Alzheimer
Society of Huron County is "to
improve the quality of life for people
with Alzheimer Disease or related
dementias and their caregivers." In
keeping with that mission, Dementia
2006 was held at the Betty Cardno
Centre in Clinton on Nov. 14.
The society's slogan is "Help for
today. Hope for tomorrow." Each of
the evening's speakers dealt with
one aspect of this slogan. As one
who worries daily about suffering
from this disease, I came away with
hope and .new ideas for improving
the life of someone with
Alzheimer's.

Linda (Brock) Hopf stopped by
the post office last week to settle her
father's mail and shared some
background on Ray. His death was
unexpected.
Ray Brock was born in West
Lorne. He and Nellie were married
in London, Ontario and had 54 years
of life together. Linda is an only
child.
Ray was a letter carrier for Canada
Post in London until his retirement.-
Shortly after his retirement Ray and
Nellie purchased that large property
at the east end of the village along
,fearful of Jesus and what his
'sentence might mean to the masses.
Christ had the love of the common -
people and seemed humble,
powerless and poor in Pilate's
presence.
Yet He has been called such things
as Prince of Peace, Lamb. of God,
Light of the World through the ages.
Christ's kingdom was/is of
another kind. Rev. Cook exhorted
those gathered that morning to live
each day as if the Messiah lives
among us. That way others will see
Christ in every day actions, words
and deeds making Christians faithful
witnesses for Him.
Assisting Rev. Cook with
Communion were Brenda Konarski,
Erica Horbanuik, Bernice Norman,
Margaret Wright and Mark Mitchell.

training in Neuroimmunology at
McGill University and Structural
Biology at the Ontario Cancer
Institute. She is a neurochemist. Her
lab has been doing promising
research on a treatment to stop this
disease.
They are certain the drug being
developed will work. This drug,
found through basic science, has
been in clinical trials with humans
since May of 2006.
Dr. McLaurin noted that there are
"91 ,clinical trials for Alzheimer's
worldwide currently. In addition to
the research drug on trial by her lab,
there are three others in Canada in or
nearing the final phase. She
predicted that there will be-a disease
modifying drug on the market within
five years. Because of the need for a
better treatment for this debilitating
disease, JoAnne stated her work will
continue.

Ray spent many hours maintaining
that yard. His daughter stated that
Ray also enjoyed watching sports on
television.
Since her mother's death, Linda
was in the habit of coming to
Londesborough on Wednesdays.
She and Ray would have supper at
Kate's Station, then indulge another
of Ray's passions, bingo. They
played regularly at Goderich and
that was where Ray ran into
difficulty.
Ray has been very lonely and
unhappy since his wife died and
Linda finds some solace in knowing
they are together again.

Davidson has a Masters degree in
rehabilitation science from the
University of Toronto, a BA in
occupational therapy and anatomy
from UWO, and a diploma in
gerontology from the U of T.
Her talk encouraged caregivers to
respond to the behaviour of those in
their care. By this she meant that a
whole picture approach should be
considered for those times patients
seem to be difficult. Behaviour,
Sylvia feels, means something.
Patients may be responding to
something physical they are not able
to vocalize, something about the
environment they can't understand
or perhaps something disturbing
about the caregiver at that particular
time.
An Alzheimer's patient has lost all
independence and control over their
lives. Learning more about a
patient's former life and interests is a
useful tool in managing their care.
Her talk was full of humour and
energy. Ms Davidson emphasized
that care is all about-helping these
persons have a good day just one
day at a time. Her suggestions
offered "help for today".
The six attendants were siblings

was held a the White Carnation in
Holmesville.

home of Rob and Yvonne Wilts in
2005. Crystal is a teacher at Blyth
