Walkerburn Club meets
Auburn community would like to
extend congratulations to Jean,
Plaetzer on the occasion of her 75th
birthday. Friends, neighbours and
relatives joined in wishing her happy
birthday on Saturday at the Blyth
United Church.
I have known Jean for several
years now and let me say, when I
heard the number 75, I was
dumfounded. But there you have it.
I have also heard from several
sources that Jean is all but back to
her old self after a frightful illness
earlier this year. All the best Jean
and one more hardy congratulations
from all your Women's Institute
friends, scattered near and far.
Betty Archambault and I travelled
to London on Thursday this week.
While it isn't the first time Betty and
I have misplaced a location, this one
will remain in our bag of stories to
tell for a while. This was the London
Area Women's Institute executive's
first meeting since being ratified on
Oct. 5 at the Area Convention held
in Thorndale. It was a very
productive meeting with 15
members present and offering
information and ideas.
A lot of discussion centered on the
scholarships and the investments
that fund them. It was also stated
that the submission deadline for
inclusions for the next seasonal
publication is extended to mid-
January. This covers poems, stories,
recipes, etc.
THANK YOU
EVERYONE
for your support
at the polls
Nov 13. I will
work to the best
of my ability for
Central Huron over
the next 4 years.

Eight members of the Walkerburn
Club met at the home of Christena
Gross on Nov. 13.
Vera Penfound opened the
meeting with the singing of 0
Canada followed by Why Wear a
Poppy, and In Flanders Field which
was followed by a moment's silence
and prayer.
Betty Archambault read the
minutes of the last meeting and took
the roll call, which was recipes for
salads. Ila Cunningham gave the
treasurer's report.
Donations were taken up for the
Christmas Bureau and it was moved
by Christena Grosi and seconded by
Ethel Ball that a cash donation be
made to the Salvation Army and The
Red Cross.
The Club will give baskets as
Christmas gifts for the residents
without families at Restview
Retirement home. Deanna Snell will
look after the gifts for the residents.
Ball's Bridge
has support
A meeting of the Friends of Ball's
Bridge was held at the home of
Daryl Ball with 16 members
present. They heard that a
neighbour is presently repairing a
bridge in Indiana and could replace
the rivets on Ball's Bridge.
Everyone shared their thoughts
and ideas about the forum held in
Goderich and any information
received since the last meeting.
Rebecca Garrett and Daryl Ball will
meet with two members of county
council, A-C-W council and Central
Huron council on Dec. 18. Bill
Crawford and Lloyd Penfound were
named as alternates for that
meeting.
It was moved by Lee Davids and
seconded by Bill Seers that the
committee- stick with plan A, which
is repairing and keeping the bridge
open to traffic. There has been to
date, over 1,000 signatures on a
petition to keep Ball's Bridge open.
First let me say, wow! One
thousand signatures! Secondly, let
me add — come on, Huron County,
we can do better than that. That's
only one in 50 (or thereabouts).
Take a couple of minutes to learn
more about this historic site. Get on
that website or find a committee
member and save this magnificent
iron maiden.
Mrs. Penfound will get a gift for
John Raithby.
Five members met at Restview on
Oct. 16 to sing old-time favourites
and four members were at Restview
on Nov. 20 to sing Christmas carols
together.
The club members will be making
St. Patrick's Day tray favours for the
patients at Clinton hospital.
1The next meeting is to be held at
the home of Ila Cunningham on Jan.
8.
Christmas cards were signed to go
with the gifts and to some former
members or their husbands.
Mrs. Penfound was in charge of
the program and it was a reading
about the Queen's farm of 15,000
acres with herds of Ayrshires and
Jerseys.
In the absence of Gun McLean,
Mrs. Penfound provided lunch and
assisted the hostess with serving. A
social half hour was held.

Wheeler
goaltender
of the week
Colgate University women's
hockey player Brook Wheeler,
Brussels, was named the ECAC
Hockey League Goaltender of the
Week for the week ending Nov. 26.
Wheeler made a season-high 33
saves in a 3-2 win over number five
St. Lawrence on Saturday. It was the
senior goaltender's first appearance
between the pipes since Nov. 4.
The Saints took immediate control
of the game, outshooting Colgate
16-1 in the opening frame, but
Wheeler kept the Raiders alive
allowing just one powerplay goal
during that time.
This is Wheeler's first win over a
nationally-ranked opponent this
season, and the team's second,
having defeated number four
Dartmouth on Nov. 11.
Wheeler also backstopped the
Raiders in last season's 3-0 shutout
of number three St. Lawrence that
saw her earn the USCHO.com
National Defensive Player of the
Week after making a career-high 51
saves.
