THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2006. PAGE 17. What a difference a week of good weather will do. The field crops have mostly been harvested and there are many out ploughing, cleaning up equipment and putting things away ready for winter. It's only 39 days until Christmas and the stores are all gearing up with displays and best buys, great deals on sale and cheapest prices anywhere advertising to lure everyone out to shop. In my own family (my brothers and sisters) we used to draw names and buy for each other. But what to buy? Families live father apart and to know each other's taste as we grow older gets harder and harder. There was a great flyer that came in last week's mail that I thought was really a good idea. It was from World Vision and there were some great ways and ideas to help give to others who are not as fortunate as we are here in Canada. Not handouts — but ways to help people in other countries help themselves. There were gifts of Women's Members of the Walton Women's Institute met at the home of Helen Craig on Wednesday evening with seven members present. The minutes were read and correspondence dealt with. Leona McDonald highlighted the area convention held in St. Agatha in animals such as chickens to produce eggs, rabbits, pigs for raising, goats and cows to produce milk and other ways to help people help themselves to provide food for themselves and families. Getting away for a holiday were Anne and Gerry Ryan. They drove to Montreal for the weekend to visit Gerry's sister, Joan and husband Don McDonald. They enjoyed visits with many of Don and Joan's family and attended a birthday party for their son. They weren't away long but had a great time and caught up with each other on the drive to and from Montreal. Marilyn McDonald was off to Sarnia to visit with daughter Pat and husband Mike Parr and boys. She attended the huge Christmas craft show that Pat helps to organize and was amazed at the wonderful and different ideas. We are glad to see Monique Baan is coming along well following surgery on her hand. We understand that Mary' Humphries is returning to Huronlea after being in hospital. We wish her a speedy recovery. Still in hospital is Malinda Johnston and we hope she is improving. It was another short stay in hospital for Mary Bryans but she too is back to her home at Huronlea. Congratulations to Mike and Lori Goos on the birth of daughter Carlene. Big siblings Faren and Zak Institute October. The Branches are requested to hold a fundraiser for the Go Go Grannies which support countries with AIDS. The Women's Institutes are 100 years strong in 2007 and each Branch is to help celebrate. The 2007 area convention will be seem pleased with the new baby. Of course Ken and Betty Glanville are thrilled as well. Don and Pat Dalton are not the proud parents of a new child but a new pup. Pat was showing pictures of their new addition, Sophie Dorothy Dalton, a Yorkshire Terrier, to everyone at the Walton Inn. Pat reports that Don is feeling very unimportant being displaced by the new pup and that he may be heading for the doghouse. Don reports he's afraid to walk around the house featuring he will step on the four- pound cutie but reports he'll get used to it. Neil and Marie McGavin attended the funeral of Mary Peacock last week and entertained members and relatives of the family at their home. Joining them for dinner were Ross and Bunny Peacock, and Lloyd Peacock, Anne Pearson and Peter, Terry and Teresa Johnston and Shirley Nicholson. They replayed times of their youth when they gathered and played a rousing game of lost heir and had a great time playing and visiting. The Lee family was off for the weekend to Lindsay. They were attending the wedding of good friend and former Walton/Seaforth girl Mandy Hadenko to Duncan Hogkinson. Matt Lee, who was accompanied by his wife Cheryl and little Ryder, is Mandy's best friend. He served as attendant for her, in what is meets held in Palmerston on Oct. 18. Helen introduced the guest speaker, Joanne Salverda, who spoke on making jackets and pants for golfers.„ Angel food cake and fresh fruit were served by Helen and Brenda Perrie. traditionally known as the matron of honour. Brett Lee, accompanied by wife Tracy and Caden, was the master of ceremonies for the affair. Guests from the area were Chris and Judy Lee, Dave and Shannon Soontiens and Jen Siemon and friend. Larry Dalrymple was home from Alberta for the occasion. Congrats to Mandy and Duncan. Speaking with Chris Lee, he reports two unusual meetings with people while away. The folks in the next room were from St. Thomas but know where Walton was because of purchasing a tractor from McGavins. Other people from afar also know where Walton was because they had just spent a week in Brussels attending alternative energy meetings in the area. Walton's not that unknown after all. People from Kent, England also knew Walton after spending a few days with Neil and Marie McGavin. The McGavins met Ralph and Laurel Stevens while attending the World Plowing Match in Ireland. As with many conversations and meeting people while away that statement was made, "If you're ever in our area (Canada), give us a call." Well the Stevens came to Canada and gave the McGavins a call. They stayed at Mitchell's B&B and the McGavins showed them around. FROM WALTON They farm in England and were particularly interested in cattle- handling equipment. The McGavins showed them around farms in the Lucan, Wingham, Meaford and Markdale areas so they could see the equipment in a working capacity. They also attended the Remembrance Day service in Brussels. They were then off to Alberta to visit with family and check out the factory where some cattle-handling equipment is made. RATEPAYERS OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF MORRIS-TURNBERRY Your support at the election was greatly appreciated. I will continue to work hard to represent you and do my very best for the betterment of the Municipality. Thank You Mayor Dorothy Kelly Service at Duff's United The service at Walton's Duff's United Church was held downstairs this past Sunday. Gail Clarkson is away to Guatemala for a week so Gloria Wilbee was in charge. Taking part in the service were members of the minister's search committee: Bonnie Glanville, Heidi McClure, Jeff McGavin, Murray Dennis and Jim Campbell. The offering was collected by Howard Hackwell and Steve Baan. The service was followed by discussions about the setting of the criteria in searching for a minister for Duff's United. Groups were formed and many questions and ideas were discussed. A light lunch followed the adjournment. A new secretary is needed for the Walton UCW beginning Jan. 1.
