Madill a week after two students pulled a fake gun in a classroom. Madill principal Jim Ryan said that it is important to keep the incident in perspective. "You want people to realize that there are consequences for these types of actions, but there is a feeling that we don't want to make more out of this than it was," Ryan said. "Modern culture sometimes needs to sensationalize these types of things. We want to avoid that." On Nov. 9, two Grade 10 students pointed a fake gun into a classroom. Apparently they were trying to pull a prank. The two students were seen walking through the halls wearing masks and carrying the gun, which they made in drama class. Police responded to the incident, arriving a the school shortly after 1 p.m. They quickly apprehended the students, who were compliant when approached. The boys were charged with mischief and will appear in Goderich court Jan. 11, 2007. They were also suspended from school for an undisclosed amount of time. According to Avon Maitland District School Board representative Steve Howe, details about the boys' school discipline will not be released for legal reasons. However, he said that the situation is being handled appropriately at Madill. "It's fair to say that everything possible is being done to ensure that the staff and students at Madill are safe," Howe said. Ryan too is careful not to reveal much about the boys involved in the incident. However, he is quick to point out that he is confident that they do not pose a risk to themselves or others. "It's safe to say," Ryan said, "that the boys involved had no ill intent, no intent to cause harm." "They did not envision at all the consequences of their actions. We aren't dealing with young people who are unwell." Ryan said that the Madill community is unlikely to hold any ill-feelings towards the boys once they return from their suspension. "They will be welcomed back," Ryan said. Ryan is trying to look at the positive aspects of the situation. It allowed the school to practise its emergency procedures in a real situation, which turned out not to be threatening. Additionally, teachers at the school have used the incident as a learning experience for the students. "A number of teachers have had discussions in their classrooms with the students," Ryan said. "We are getting a lot of feedback about the • level of awareness among students about the seriousness of the situation." Ryan has invited local police to speak to the student body about the incident in an attempt to ensure that everyone understands that a similar incident can't happen again. Police have yet to respond to the 'school's request. Ultimately, the incident hasn't been a hot topic on campus according to Ryan. He said that he was unaware of any student requesting counseling — on a formal or informal level — about- the incident. "I talked to the students on Friday, but after it hasn't been something that they have been talking about," he said. "Right away, the students seemed to put the incident in perspective. They realized that it was a prank." CALL OR VISIT UBRO FINANCIAL GROUP: 1-800-361-8222 vvww.libro.ca A scary prank, says Ryan, but not the scariest thing he deals with as principal. "These types of things are really intense for a short period of time," Ryan said. "It's quite scary at the time, but it quickly becomes apparent that things are under control. "Things become normal again quickly." It's things that he has less control over that Ryan worries about most. "It's the daily stuff, however, that makes you worry most of all. Every winter when I see the kids show up in their snowmobiles and I see them whipping around the fields. "I have to go down and have a chat with them. "Each spring when you know that every weekend students are going to a party in some field, on someone's property. You just hope that they all return back safely to school on Monday." "That's the stuff you really worry about." rto Can't decide what give for Christmas? .._.„-, 0 ,---,•,"D • r._,,-:-._ a -:_,..e.--) • CI-A.'"). s ,....,e7.) • _.•,-- • r.•,,e,":,.., 1,) •, , ,,....-, . _,., h.. _A., .'t`,,,,,. ,..,.._,., We have 541 Turnberry A gift certificate Everything 519-887-9114 FOR the shelves gardening The St., ..1-, til4 !
