Busy week
for
firefighters
It was a busy time for Brussels
firefighters as they responded to
three calls recently.
On Sunday, Nov. 5, a van owned
by Ron McLellan caught fire in the
driveway of 310 Turnberry St. at
approximately 9 p.m. Fire chief
Murray McArter said the blaze
started in the motor. The vehicle
had been towed home that day, he
said.
At 10:06 p.in. Nov. 7, firefighters
were called to a packaging place,
owned -by Ken Smith at 205
Princess St. in the industrial park.
According to McArter some
absorbent packing material had
begun smoking inside and was
removed outside where the
situation worsened. He said the
owner estimated the loss at $2,000.
There was no fire, but McArter
said they were on the scene for two
hours, dumping "loads of water on
the material."
Wednesday at 10:49 a.m. a
washing machine at an apartment at
470 Elizabeth St. ,started on fire.
McArter said the machine, which
was not being used at the time, had
apparently been repaired a few days
before.
There was a lot of smoke but
damage was limited to the machine,
said McArter.

Lest we forget: Another year has
passed as we pause to think of the
people in our lives that were/are part
of the military. Depending on the year
under consideration a life in the
service could have been an
obligation, a choice, an adventure or a
career.
So on Nov. 11 as we think about
our country and the freedom we often
take for granted, our minds do go to
the people that we know best. As the
Whittard.
Lucky tallies were Jean Bewley,
Olivr. Papple, Elunid McNair, Beryl
Smith, Alvin McDonald, Mary
Huether, Walter Barber, Leona
McDonald, Jean Plaetzer, Orval
Bauer, Helen Gallop and Lawrence
Plaetzer.
rains fell and the mood fit the weather
we silently said thank you.. For
freedom of choice, for freedom of
speech, for freedom of religion, for
freedom to be an individual in the
crowd we once again stay silent and
think about the lives that were forever
changed because of war and peace.
We will remember them, oh yes we
will remember them.
The United Church has people
talking. Hallelujah! A series of ads
are ready to hit the media, paid for by -
a bequest to the National Church
from the Morrison family.
The whole purpose of the ads is to
get people thinking about their,
spirituality, faith and their opinion of
organized religion. When the
percentage of people who regularly
attend a worship service is below 20
per cent, it's time to ask why.
The thought line of the ads is not
your usual church agenda and that is
the whole point. An invitation to think
about life as a whole, your part in the
big picture and where church could
help is the gist of the whole
campaign. The point for the regular
church-goer is to try to understand -the
other point of view.
So enjoy the ads as you see them
and look at them with clear new eyes.
It's always good to talk about
important things and in this case
listening is the key.
Christmas is sneaking up on us. As
I write this the Christmas cake is in
the oven and smelling pretty fine.
Family plans are taking shape aswork
schedules are compared and free
dates are listed. For weekend workers
finding an agreeable time is often part
of the fun of getting together. The
stores are all geared up and the
advertising has begun.
Our parade is set for 5 p.m. on Dec.
25 with peace on earth as the theme.
So mark your calendar and get your
stuff ready to be part of the fun.
Preplanning is a big part of any
community event and once again
there are many groups and individuals
whO have been thinking Santa Claus
Parade for months. The bands have
been booked, the theme has been set,
the fellow in red has been scheduled,
the donations have been solicited, the
candy ordered and ready to bag.
So thanks to the Business
Association, the Lions and Optimist
Club,, the firefighters and the many
others who see community events
such as this imptttam.
If you're out and about on Friday
check in at Huronlea for a little lunch
and silent auction fun. A barbecue
lunch for $6 is being held for the
VanderMeer family. Help them
recover.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
