University students are Tutors on the Bus
By Stew Slater
Special to The Citizen.
Tutors on the Bus — it's not the
name of the latest Hollywood
comedy, nor is it a new children's
song.
It's the new and improved version
of a program for University of
Western Ontario (UWO) students,
first introduced last year by the
Huron-Perth Catholic District
School Board.
Under the program, about 30 third
and fourth-year students — almost all
of whom aspire to enter teacher's
college in the coming years — hop on
a bus in London on Tuesday
morning, travel to Stratford, and
spend the morning providing
instruction and inspiration to
elementary students.
"Each (UWO) student generally
works with about five different
(elementary school) students
throughout the morning," explained
Huron -Pe rth education
superintendent Martha Dutrizac,
who was instrumental in introducing
the program last year and then fine-
tuning it for better effectiveness this
year.
The university students are back in
London by just after noon. "They're
not forfeiting their major
commitment — which is their
university studies — by being
involved in this program," Dutrizac
explained.
King's University College, which
is a part of UWO, is a partner in
Tutors on the Bus, as is the Literacy
and Numeracy Directorate of the
provincial Education ministry.
Huron-Perth staff conducted an
orientation session at the university
earlier this month, both to drum up
interest and prepare prospective
participants for what the program
requires.
According to Dutrizac, last year's
version of the program suffered from
both a lack of solid routine and a
lack of long-term commitment from
the participants. It started with 14
university students on the bus, and
dwindled through the year.
This year, a routine has been
established by scheduling 18
Tuesdays between October and
March for the program. And
Dutrizac is confident this year's
orientation process will play a role in
increasing commitment from the
participants.
She notes most, if not all, faculties
of education will look favourably at
such experience among, applicants.
"It's got lots of positives for
everybody," the superintendent said.
