Grade_718s get apprenticeship information
Glen MacGregor, the Ontario
Youth Apprenticeship Program co-
ordinator for the Avon Maitland
District School Board will present
information to East Wawanosh's
Grade 7/8 students on the
opportunities that they may have in
selecting an apprenticeship program
in secondary school and the career
opportunities that are open to
them.
The presentation for students will
take place on Thursday, Nov. 9.
There will be a session for parents
who would like to learn more about
this program at F.E. Madill
Secondary School at 7 p.m. in the
technology area of the school.
East Wawanosh Public School has
two student teachers at the school.
Jessica Mann is a student teacher
from Laurier Brantford University.
She is currently in her third year in
the Nipissing Education Concurrent
Education program in the primary-
junior division.
Mann lives in Lucknow and plans
to eventually live and teach in the
area once she graduates from
University. Mann is in the Grade 5/8
classroom with Ms Elder every
Monday and for one week at the end
of April.
Ingrid Goulding from Daemen
College Faculty of Education in
New York State will be practise
teaching with Miss Mathers and the
Grade 1/2 class every day until
Christmas.
The girls and boys teams travelled
to Brussels to participate in the
North Huron soccer tournament on a
cool; wet Friday, Oct. 20.
The members of the girls' team
were: Loretta Thompson, Brittany.
Weber, Bonnie Nethery, Kelsey
Smith, Carly Whitfield, Jenny
Anderson, Stephanie Robinson,
Melissa Leishman, Brittany Haines,
Jillian Montgomery, Rachel

The members of the boys' team

Stevenson, Cody Stute and Josh
White. Thank you to the helpers for
the day: Ben Pletch, Ryan Shiell,
Evan Wesselink, Jimi Van De Walle,
Caitlin Daw, Katelyn Casemore,
Rebecca Guy and Sydney Jarvis.
Grade 4/5 students had the
opportunity to take part in a
workshop to look at the work of five
important Canadian artists. Bill
Reid, a sculptor/designer from B.C.,
William Kurelek, a painter from the
prairies, Norval Morrisseau, an
Ojibway artist from Ontario,
Clarence Gagnon of Quebec and
David Blackwood, a printmaker
from Newfoundland.
Each artist had, stories to tell,
whether it was mythical, cultural or
historical.
Each student designed and
constructed a narrative sculpture
that illustrates a regional story or
legend, in the style of one of the
artists. The sculptures were built
with assigned materials as well as
found objects.
After the presentation, students.
defined forms of sculpture,
materials and methods used and the
elements of art.
The Foundation for Enriching
Education with the Avon Maitland
District School Board made this
presentation possible.
There will be a Remembrance
Day service on Friday, Nov. 10 at 10
a.m. in the school auditorium.
students who belong to Guides,
Sparks, Brownies, Cubs, Scouts and
Air Cadets, etc. are encouraged to
wear their uniforms for the
assembly. Parents/guardians and
members of the community are
welcome to attend and remain
afterwards for refreshments.
Students in Grades 1/2, 2/3, 3/4
and 4/5 will have the opportunity to
attend a saxophone concert at the
school on Friday, Nov. 17 at 9:15
a.m.
Saxophone virtuoso Willem
Moolenbeek performs on soprano,
alto and tenor saxophones. This is a
fast-paced performance where every
style from Baroque to classical and
blues and jazz are performed. The
history of the saxophone and its
relationship to the development of
popular music is demonstrated, how
sound • is produced and the
relationship between rhythm and
melody are taught.
An innovative system -of
mnemonics is used to engage the
audience in constructing and
performing rhythm patterns. The
Foundation for Enriching Education
with the Avon Maitland District
School Board makes this
performance possible.
The Huron County Health Unit
will be offering free flu shots to all
students at school-based clinics
across the county. The school-based
clinics make it easier for parents to
ensure that their children get the flu
shot. For those families who
struggle to make an appointment
with a family physician, school-
based clinic are a safe, simple
alternative.
The school will be participating in
the North Huron volleyball
tournament to be held on Thursday,
Nov. 23 at the F.E. Madill
Secondary School. The snow date is
Friday, Nov. 24.
The next school advisory council
meeting will be held on Thursday,
Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. in the schOol
library. An agenda will be sent home
closer to the date of the meeting.
The school will be doing the
theme baskets fundraiser again this
year. Each class will be doing the
same theme as last year.
Students are asked to help fill the
baskets with items related to the
themes. Families may also go
together to purchase these items. All
items need to be sent in to the school
by Monday, Nov. 27.
The baskets will be assembled and
wrapped on Thursday, Nov. 30.
Once they are wrapped they will be
put on display for . parent/teacher
interviews on Thursday, Dec. 7 and
Friday, Dec. 8 and also the night of
the Christmas concert.
Raffle tickets will be sold during
parent/teacher interviews and before
the concert. At the conclusion of the
concert, the winning ticket will be
drawn for each basket.
The themes that each class has
selected is: Kindergarten A and B,
Max and Lynne Pletch of Dryden
were guests for a week at the home
of Max's mother, Thelma Pletch.
They also visited with other
members of the family, and spent a
week with their daughter Krista in
Toronto.
