A bridal shower was held Oct. 21
at the home of Judy Smith for bride-
to-be Holly Grubb.
The wedding party took the bride
on a scavenger hunt to different
stores and businesses in Brussels.
Another season has passed. With
commerce seeming to run the
lucrative holidays, Halloween has
taken up a spot of its own. Easily
tucked up between the buying surge
for return to school and
Thanksgiving and leaning into
Christmas, Halloween has its own
decorations, lights and candy.
So with a few more dollars out of
pocket and the trinkets and treasures

It was a busy weekend at the
Brussels Legion Branch.
The Friday night supper of
Salisbury steak was enjoyed by
many. This week it's pork chops.
The craft show doors opened at 8
a.m. on Saturday morning for the
vendor set up.
Downstairs was kept busy with the
surprise birthday party for Chris
Stevenson. Nearly 40 fatnily and
friends gathered to usher Chris into
his 30s at the party which was
arranged by his wife Lisa. Congrats
to Chris.
Bright and early Saturday
morning, the 24 vendors arrived to
set up the variety of wares including
tupperware, knitting, crocheting,
crochet doilies, tablecloths, painted
stones, baking, woodcrafts, flower
arrangements, Christmas wreaths,
Grey Twp. souvenirs, children's
sweaters, jewellery, Cadet draws,
tablecloths, Barbie doll cloths,
crochet angels, epicure and the
Legion bake table.
There were 12 Comrades working
to make the craft show and bake sale
a success: Elaine Nichol, Barb
Dunbar and Nicole Lowe at the door,
Leona McDonald, Margaret Bennett,
Jean Bridge, Mary Thomas and
Grace Proctor at the bake table,
Helen Brenie, Judy Lee, Deb Cann
and Jo-Ann McDonald at the lunch
table. Two young ladies also helped
as part of their civic course at
Wingham high school: Fauve
Dendekker and Keshia Jamieson-
Johnson.
Downstairs at the Branch on
Saturday morning was the gathering
of Legion comrades and members of
the Brussels Cadet Corps. They were
organizing to go out and canvass the
village door-to-door for the annual
poppy canvass. The 14 Cadets and 10

tucked away for another year we
move on to Christmas. Let the

Friday night saw several area folks
dining in Exeter. It was celebration
time for the 2006 Huron County .
warden. This year we were
celebrating the time, interest, energy
and work of Rob Morley supported
by partner Ann. Friends, present
mayors and reeves and past wardens
all enjoyed this time to catch up and
reconnect.
This year the last of the old
municipalitiei was recognized as the
place and people that got Rob started
at the county level of municipal
politics. Good food, good music and
lots of chat always makes a pleasant
evening. Thanks Rob.
Before the snow takes over, you
need to take a walk in the park. Head
to the Conservation area to view the
changes as the work gets started.
This ptoject initiated by the Optimist
Club will be another one that we will
be very proud of as a community.
Every service club, organization and
person has been invited to take part
in the revitalization of the river park.
Our future generations will see
that this is an important part of our
life as the dreams, plans and work
unfold. Catch the spirit of
community and give your support to
this Dam project, oops it's a park
project.
On Saturday we spent our time in
thought of lives well lead. A service
of celebration was held for Lloyd
Smith in Listowel. He was
grandfather to the Parker girls and
father of Karen, baker for the
Elwood Smith grocery store in
Listowel before cakes and muffins
came frozen in a box and an all-
round nice guy. He knew how -to
.handle life and he knew how to
appreciate it every day.
There are stories in this place
about who made the best rice
pudding and Lloyd's name is near or
at the top.
So think nice thoughts of a good
man, Karen, Lisa, Tara, Lori and
Lara.
Then on to Wingham to say hello
to the Peacocks. Mary's life was to
be celebrated, another fine soul who
made this a better place.
Grace, with kind words and
hospitality, come quickly to mind
when Mary is in the thoughts.
Bluevale memories include Mary
and Bill with Ross, Anne and Lloyd
as school, church and community
life took place.
Perhaps it's because my parents
are dead that the memories of
growing up are so special. When I
think of. all the Bluevale community
that helped raise. and shape us,
names like Peacock, Johnston,
Craig, Nicholson, Mathers, Brewer,
Garniss, Thompson, Hall, Shaw,
MacLennan, Lillow and on and on, I
jug smile. We had to be the luckiest
kids to grow up with the community
expecting the very best of everyone
of us. Thanks to the folks like Mary
and Bill.
So two celebrations for two folks
who helped make the world a better
place. Examples like Mary and
Lloyd of making people more
important than ourselves need to be
celebrated and copied every day.
They both knew the importance of a
smile and a laugh.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
