Sunshine: Lot 10, Concession 6, Morris Township. Self-guided tour Sunshine was founded in 1868 as the village of Providence by Alfred (Paddy) Brown. The economy of the village depended on the sawmill, powered by the swift flowing Maitland River. Clearing the surrounding land for farms ensured there was a continuous supply of sawlogs. Brown built the first sawmill in 1868. In 1877, the village's name was changed from Providence to Sunshine. In 1878, the saw mill, upon which most of the economy of Sunshine was dependent, burned to the ground. Mr. Rogerson completely replaced it at a cost of $2500, though his insurance only paid him $1,000. Sunshine began to decline after some terrible bush fires in 1879 which caused significant timber losses to area farmers. As the amount of local timber declined, the rivalry from nearby railway towns sealed Sunshine's fate. Despite the decline in the industries and businesses of Sunshine, its religious and community life continued well into the 1920s. All that remains of Sunshine is the cemetery. The hilltop cemetery is an interesting one to wander through. The first reeve of Morris Township, Charles Parker and his wife, rests here. There are also two memorials to a tragic drowning that happened close by in the Maitland River in 1886. Don't miss a visit to this little gem of a pioneer cemetery. spePcLiaEiArsimE thiseNf°0r.1- Activity 1 6.
