Ever wonder what happens on a
farm? Would you like to meet some
farmers?
Eight new virtual farm tours on
the www.farmissues.com can
answer these questions and hun-
dreds more. Visitors to the site can
now tour 1 I Ontario farms - includ-
ing new ones which feature dairy
cows, pigs, veal calves and both
dairy and market goats. The new vir-
tual experiences have been added to
tours for beef cattle, sheep, deer and
elk farms that were launched in
January of 2006.
The project is designed to open
barn doors for people who might
never otherwise have the chance to
tour a livestock farm. Visitors to the
site have the option of touring the
barns and fields of each farm to get
a close up view of what's happening.
Video clips enhance the experi-
ence by introducing visitors to the
farmers who live and work on these
farms. In each case, the farmers talk
about their animals and why they've
chosen to pursue a career in agricul-
ture.
Tours for chicken, ratite (ostrich,
emu, rhea) turkey and egg farms are
yet to come.
Funding for this project came
from several sources including
Dairy Farmers of Canada, the
Ontario Dairy Goat Co-operative
and Grober Veal as well as from the
CORD program through Ontario
Pork, the Ontario Goat Breeders'
Association and the Ontario Veal
Association. The CORD program is
funded by the government of
Canada and the Province of Ontario
under the Canada-Ontario Research
and Development (CORD) Program,
an initiative of the federal-provin-
cial-territorial Agricultural Policy
