Tips to make your home senior friendly
Senior friendly
There are steps you can take around the house to ensure
your home is functional and safe for senior living.
danger of falls and injuries or
making a move to a home that may
be more suitable. Few, however,
relish the idea of changing
residences in their retirement years.
Fortunately, there's another
option: modifying the home to be
jutting out.
The bottom ridge juts out in front
are often found in areas of the home
that have high humidity levels, such
as bathrooms, kitchens, laundry
rooms or basements. Dust mites and
animal dander are problematic when
they become airborne during
vacuuming, making beds or when
textiles are disturbed.
These airborne allergens then
continuously circulate through your
indoor air due to being trapped inside
your highly insulated, energy-
efficient homes.
What can you do to deal with the
problem of biological contaminants
in your home?
• Watch for the signs. You can
sometimes- see and smell mold
colonies growing on surfaces. Mold
growth should be suspected
wherever there are water stains,
standing water or moist surfaces.
(MS) — As people grow older,
getting around the house is no
longer a given. Arthritis and other
ailments can make moving around a
difficult proposition.
This puts seniors in the position of
making choices -- either risking the
(MS) — Molds, mildew, fungi,
bacteria and dust mites are some of
the main biological pollutants that
reside in the average home. In many
of us, exposure to these airborne
pollutants will cause health problems
such as allergies and even asthma.
Symptoms often include watery
eyes. runny nose and sneezing, nasal
congestion, itching, coughing,
wheezing, headache, dizziness and
fatigue. In fact, dust mites hav,e been
identified as the single most
important trigger for asthma attacks.
In order to deal with these
pollutants it's important to know
their source. Some pollutants, such
as pollen, are generated outside the
home by trees and plants. Mold and
mildew are generated in the home
and release spores into the air.
Mold, mildew, fungi and bacteria
(MS) — One way to make small,
yet noticeable changes to your
home is by installing mouldings
throughout.
Used primanly around doors and
windows, mouldings are narrow
strips of wood designed to add to a
room's decor.
Mouldings offer a variety of
looks, as the following types of
mouldings suggest.
• Cavetto: this is the curved semi-
circle moulding where the top edge
juts out over the bottom.
• Ovolo: this is the curved, quarter
eliptical moulding, where the part
you'll be able to feel once it's
installed will be rounded.
• Cyma Reversa: this is an almost
wavy moulding that features kind of
a rippling effect, with the top of the
slightly rounded moulding jutting
out more than the bottom.
• Cyma Recta: the same pattern as
the cyma reversa, except the bottom
juts out more than the top.
• Torus: perhaps the most in-your-
face type of moulding, it juts out
from top to bottom, creating a semi-
circular look where the top and
bottom ridges are the closest parts
to the wall or window.
• Scotia: this is considerably more
reserved than the torus, with the
centre receding as opposed to
safer and more user-friendly.
Several preemptive steps can be
taken to make a home equipped and
comfortable for living out senior
years.
• Lighting. While you may feel as
though you know your home like the
back of your hand, you should still
install some extra lighting
throughout your home as you get
older.
To avoid falls, make sure
staircases are well lit. If not, have
overhead lights installed and make
sure all light switches are easy to
reach. Around a staircase, make sure
there's a light switch at the top and
bottom of the stairs. Battery-
operated lights can do the trick and
help you avoid costly electrician
costs.
• Add a telephone or two. Though
it's good, especially for seniors, to
always have a cell phone on hand,
it's also a good idea to equip your
home with an extra telephone in key
rooms — even in the bathroom,
where falls often occur. If you suffer
from arthritis, give your aches and
pains a break and have a telephone
installed in a reading room or family
room if they're not already there. In
addition; install a telephone in your
bedroom.
This will keep you from making
• Prevent mold growth by keeping
basements, bathrooms and other
rooms clean and dry. Use a
disinfectant to clean surfaces that
have mold on them. If carpeting or
furnishings become wet, they must
be quickly and thoroughly dried or
discarded.
• Humidifiers, dehumidifiers and
air conditioning condensing units
should be regularly cleaned with a
disinfectant such as chlorine bleach.
• Vacuums with high efficiency
filters or central vacuum systems can
help reduce_ the airborne &1st
generated by vacuuming.
• Keep humidity at acceptable
levels (less than 50 per cent) and
make sure there's plenty of
ventilation throughout your home,
especially in areas where moisture
tends to build up.
long, unnecessary walks, saving
your legs for more important things
like travelling or playing with the
grandkids.
• Install extra handrails. Staircases
and bathrooms are often the scene of
the crime with respect to home
accidents involving seniors.
Slippery floors in bathrooms can be
countered by adding a handrail
along the wall right outside your
shower or tub. With something to
grab onto as you step .out, you're
less likely to slip on a wet floor.
Consider also placing a seat or
handrail in the shower so you can
steady yourself when washing.
In addition, an extra handrail
opposite the existing handrail on
your staircase can compensate for
any diminished vision that comes
with aging and leads to a loss of
depth perception that often causes
spills on the staircase.
With the extra ha9drail to hold
onto, you can avoid falling
altogether or minimize the damage
done if you do fall.
