What a chilly few days folks. Not
as much of a shock as a bit south but
there is still lots of work to do
outside so I am hoping we get a few
more days of sunshine. Of course the
turnip can come up now and they.
won't be bitter. Isn't that the way it
goes?
There will be a lot of folks in and
around the village who will have
their fires going. The weather has
really snapped around the old stove
pipe. Wayne is at this moment up on
the roof cleaning the chimney so all
will be safe to coax a little heat out
of the stack of wood the kids got in
last weekend. A dandy load of wood
it was too; chopped and delivered by
that nice young Ben fellow from
Auburn.
Auburn-area resident, Rhea
Seeger and her neighbour Barb
The last meeting of the Crazy
Campers 4-H was on Friday, Oct. 13
at 7 p.m. to Oct. 14.
They camped at the Wawanosh
Nature Centre.
They went for a hike. The snow
didn't stop them from learning many
things such as the different types of
trees and the different types of
tracks. On the hike they saw tracks
made by coyote, fox, bird, rabbit,
deer and some sort of rodent. They
saw a deer, a mouse, birds, and a
turkey.
For a bedtime snack they had
smores, prepared by Joscelin
Andrews, Jolande Oudshoom and
Mary-Ellen Foran.
Bedtime was at 11:30 p.m. but
they stayed up telling stories and
jokes.
They woke the people who slept in
by a cheery 4-H song that involved
the pledge in it. For breakfast they
had pancakes and fruit. It was
Bakker were on an artist ronip
Saturday. They drove to Uxbridge to
take in a yearly art show of Gunther
Otto's work.
I had the opportunity many years
ago to spend four days studying
under Mr. Otto as a guest teacher in
Southampton. Barb, I am told,
likewise, had the pleasure of
learning under Mr. Otto on two
occasions.
The ladies were thrilled to drink in
his many works. They had a chance
to speak with the artist and enjoyed
every minute. On the way home they
wandered into Stouffville at the
request of a pamphlet pick up at the
art show. With an artist's tour in
motion they were eager to wander
the streets of the village visiting
studios and galleries.
Rhea said they "saw some
amazing art work". Next trip, I think
sister Nancy and I will be begging to
come along.
Three young members of the
Auburn community have added
some significant achievements to
their résumés.
Charlotte Worsell, daughter of
Bob and Shelley Worsell of Auburn.
was recipient of several awards at
GDCI's commencement. Along with
earning an Ontario Scholar award,
prepared by June Robinson, Janette
and Sophie Jefferson.
They played games, sang songs,
and hiked some more until it was
time for the afternoon snack that was
cooked on homemade burners,
which were made from cardboard,
hot wax, and tin cans.
Supper that night was a little
unusual. They filled out a sheet with
numbers from one to nine. The
categories on the card were first
course, second course, third course,
and last course. There was a space
under each category. Once these
were filled in they handed the cards
to Maisy, Sophie, Ellen, Reba, and
Mary-Ellen who fixed dinner by
categories. For example you might
have gotten a wiener, some cool
whip, and a bun.
After supper they played many
games until their parents came to
pick them up.
Charlotte won the Governor General
Academic Medal — for highest
academic average in her last year as
well as the Robert MacKay
Memorial Scholarship for the
highest academic standing in Grade
12. Miss Worsell also won the Dan
Stringer Science and Community
Award.
Lisa Carter, daughter of Wayne
and Cathy Carter, also earned an
Ontario Scholarship and was
recipient of the Volvo Motor Grader
Scholarship as well as the 'Volvo
Bursary. Miss Carter was also
recipient of the Pro Life student
Award, for the student who finds
ways to remove barriers to inclusion
of handicap students in school and
community activities.
Brett Bean, son of Joyce and Dana
Bean, was also named an Ontario
Scholar, and won the John Stringer
Memorial Award for Canadian
Studies. Brett also won the Chamber
of Commerce Award for the student
in Senior Accounting and involved
in school activities.
Congratulations to all the students
for all their great work!
The Friends of Ball's Bridge are
having a public forum at the Livery
in Goderich on Monday, Oct 23 at 7
p.m. They are having an information
meeting for all candidates and the
public to attend. Several
professionals will speak. They are
asking everyone to come out and
help save this historic bridge.
Friends attended the wedding of
former Auburn resident, Joel Arthur.
Joel and his bride Jenni Riley were
married and held their reception at
Salford Valley Hall. Congratulations
to the newlyweds.
