Happy Howdy
A party was held on Saturday at the Brussels arena for
Dave "Howdy" Hastings in celebration of his retirement from
Huron East. Deputy-mayor Bernie MacLellan, right, made a
presentation, which was followed by Hastings' thank you
speech. Dave was employed with the Village of Brussels in
the words of one Brussels councillor as "everything". He left
for a time to work as a trucker, but municipal interests were
still important, and he served on Brussels council for a time.
In Brussels he had also been a fire chief and commissioner
for the PUC. He eventually became road superintendent in
Grey Twp., then with amalgamation was named foreman of
the north patrol for Huron East. (Vicky Bremner photo)

guest speaker, Peter Workman, who
now lives in Nunavut. He works with
the health department and really
stressed to always wash your hands
well.
Four languages are spoken in
Nunavut — English, French,
Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun with many
variations in the different
communities.
Nunavut is now seven years old,
Canada's newest territory, with its

Food is very expensive, especially
the healthy foods, so Mr. Workman
often takes back a large quantity
since it is much-cheaper here even
with an extra shipping cost.
The UV factor is twice as bad in
the north compared to our region and
the weather a lot colder especially
with the wind chill.
He also showed carvings and seal
skin among other items that he had
brought.
Marie McCutcheon thanked Mr.
Workman for his informative talk on
Nunavut.
The next UFO will be held at Lois
