PAGE 9. )1 i 1,11.1111 Happy Howdy A party was held on Saturday at the Brussels arena for Dave "Howdy" Hastings in celebration of his retirement from Huron East. Deputy-mayor Bernie MacLellan, right, made a presentation, which was followed by Hastings' thank you speech. Dave was employed with the Village of Brussels in the words of one Brussels councillor as "everything". He left for a time to work as a trucker, but municipal interests were still important,and he served on Brussels council for a time. In Brussels he had also been a fire chief and commissioner for the PUC. He eventually became road superintendent in Grey Twp., then with amalgamation was named foreman of the north patrol for Huron East. (Vicky Bremner photo) Members of the Walton Women's Institute attended the county rally in Dashwood last week. Enjoying their day away were Brenda Perrie, Margaret McMahon, Marjory Humphries and Leona McDonald. It was an all-day affair with guest speaker, business section and of course lunch. The group approved donations to the Huron Perth Children's Aid and 4-H clubs and approved scholarships for many Huron County high schools. Congratulations to Dwayne Pryce and Karen Depouter who were married last weekend. The nuptials were held in Stratford with dinner and reception held at the Festival Inn. Parents were Brian and Sharon Pryce. Grandparents are Maxine Marks and Harold and Naomi Pryce. Returning from moose hunting near Dryden were one local hunter and friends, Mike Boven and friends Were successful in getting two moose. Mike got one of them. Another gang away last week to the Smooth River area was Matt Lee, Dan Taylor. Rob Shortreed, Mike Campbell, Doug Sholdice and Ron Strome. They were successful hunters as they shot a moose and an The Ethel euchre was held on Monday, Oct. 9. Winners were: share-the-wealth, Floyd Smith, Mary Craig; high, Hilda Holmes, Walter Seiler; lone hands, Violet Smith, Judy Hahn, Eileen Mann; low, Marguerite Beirnes, Marion Harrison; lucky Fourteen members and guests attended the Oct. 11 meeting for the Majestic Women's Institute with president Ruth Bauer opening the meeting. Volunteers will be needed for Brussels homecoming for July 2007. Ruth Bauer will find out where the Majestic branch can help out. Yvonne Knight introduced . the guest speaker, Peter Workman, who now lives in Nunavut. He works with the health department and really stressed to always wash your hands well. Four languages are spoken in Nunavut — English, French, Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun with many variations in the different communities. Nunavut is now seven years old, Canada's newest territory, with its flower, the purple saxifrage. Food is very expensive, especially the healthy foods, so Mr. Workman often takes back a large quantity since it is much-cheaper here even with an extra shipping cost. The UV factor is twice as bad in the north compared to our region and the weather a lot colder especially with the wind chill. He also showed carvings and seal skin among other items that he had brought. Marie McCutcheon thanked Mr. Workman for his informative talk on Nunavut. The next UFO will be held at Lois intruding bear, which made the mistake of visiting a hunting camp that had guns. Oh well, the boys are safe and the bear will be dinner. The Walton Wonders ladies' slopitch team enjoyed an Octoberfest even together on Friday evening. Travelling to Bingeman Park in Kitchener were 10 ladies along to enjoy the music and social time. Wonder awards were presented by LeeAnn Konarski to. Glenda Morrison, Brenda Linton, Jasmine Foreman, Kelly McDonald, Jenn Konarski, Jo-Ann McDonald, Joanna Wallace, Val Sluter and Judy Lee. They had a great night and good time. The Walton Masters had their annual Thanksgiving get-together at Dave and Tracy Fischer's cabin on the weekend. They enjoyed a potluck dinner with deep-fried turkey, roast beef and everything to go with it. Attending were Rick and Jo-Ann McDonald, Steve and Debbie Rathwell, Brad Knight, Steve Knight, Jack and Donna Knight, Nora Stephenson, Doug Sykes and Dave and Tracy. They played cards and had a great time. The team sends get-well wishes to Doug Conley who's been in hospital and to Jim McDonald who was ill. Returning from a great trip to British Columbia were Joe, Rhonda and Johnny Ryan. They went out to see Rhonda's sister Jennifer, her husband Dean and their two girls, Anna and Ashley. They had over a week's visit with them. They also had a chance to travel to Nanimo to visit with Paul, Teresa, Meagan and Erica Glanville. Kathy Bridge gave the District director's report from the September meeting. June 21 - 23, 2007 there will be a Not Just A Quilt Show in Barrie. The craft and quilt fair is April 23 at the Listowel Agriculture Hall. The ACWW Church Service is on April 29 at St. Paul's United Church, Milverton at 7 p.m. The first card and casserole supper will be held on Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Brussels library basement.
