Editor's note: Sandra Clark of Brussels is in Jerusalem visiting her son. Happy New Year! Last night, starting at sundown was Erev Rosh HaShana..the Jewish New Year. I believe the New Year is 5766 but don't quote me on the exact number. The synagogue service we attended was at Hebrew Union College. American rabbinical students in the Reform movement must spend one of their three years of training at the Jerusalem branch of this university system. The service started with beautiful music. The choir members are all part of the school of cantors. These young people are the cream of the crop and could be on any stage in the world. The voices are amazing. There was a concert level pianist and a flutist. Greeting people you meet is a bit complex when the New Year is on Shabbat. The typical greetings are "Shana Tovah (Happy New Year) Shabbat Shalom (Peaceful Shabbat) and another one that means Happy Holiday. Since I'm not at all fluent I just smile a lot and say the first one that falls out of my mouth. The service started at 9:15 p.m. and ended at 12:45 a.m. I sort of gasped when I heard how long it would be but, to be honest, other than one little snooze, it went rather quickly. Again, the wonderful music and another big event....the blowing of the shofar. It is quite a ceremony! There were two young men with their `shofarim' and they each did a solo in the service. The cantor announces which variety they should do. There is a staccato one, another one with two notes and then, at the end a long one. Then, after more ritual, they arise and blow their instruments in unison. It was the same routine as before but this time at the end they blow one long note and turn completely around so it blows in all directions. Their faces were really red when they finished. It was such a long note that I thought surely they would keel over! The homily was very picturesque. Naama Kelman was the first woman ordained as a rabbi in Israel. She is the sister of one of our favourite rabbi teachers. They have a history of five generations of rabbis in their family. Naama draws a lot on poetry and imagery. At one point she was telling us of a trip north to Qiryat Shemona to see the damage that was done in the recent war. Many pomegranate trees were destroyed and some were producing beautiful fruit. She came to one that was half burned. The other half was heavy with fruit. She said that there are two sides to everything. The war was a terrible, dark event this summer but now there is the serious but joyful season of the Days of Awe. The person she was with picked a beautiful pomegranate for her. For herself she picked two burned but beautifully formed pieces of fruit. She used all three to decorate her table for a Shabbat dinner. We're off to the desert for an overnight stay on Monday. We are going to Arad; a place that is mentioned in the Bible. It is intended as a quiet time and another of my favourite professors will talk to us there. Shana Tovah and Shabbat Shalom!
