In memoriam
JOHNSTON, Gladys. In loving
memory of my most precious
Mother, who passed away October
4, 2000.
I've come for a little chat Mom,
I know that you can hear,
Whenever things are difficult,
I always feel you near.
I stop awhile and talk to you,
And think about the past,
All the precious moments,
Destined not to last.
I feel your eyes upon me,
As I turn to walk away,
And that little chat I've had with
you,
Gets me through another day.
Mothers and children never truly
part,
Bound in the beating, of each
other's heart.
— Remembered always with love,
and forever in my heart.... Bernice.

MASON. In loving memory of my
mom Eleanor Mason, who passed
way 10 years ago October 4,1996.
You can only have one mother,
Patient kind and true,
No other friend in the entire world,
Will be so true to you.
For all her loving kindness,
She asks nothing in return,
If all the world deserted you,
To our mother we could turn.
To those who have a mother,
Treasure her with care,
For you'll never know her value,
Until she is no longer there.
— Always loved and missed, Mary
Lou and George Befurt and family.

Work
begins
at
schools
By Stew Slater
Special to The Citizen
Work should begin within the next
few weeks at two high-profile
construction projects of the Huron-
Perth Catholic District School
Board.
Tendering processes for additions
to St. Michael's high school in
Stratford and Sacred Heart
elementary school in Wingham are
both set to close in early October,
with trustees expected to approve
the most suitable bid in each case.
The St. Mike's project is high-
profile for all the right reasons: with
the construction of a new
entranceway and additional
instructional space, it's expected to
ease the ongoing pressure of near-
capacity student population and the
presence of several "portable" _
classrooms.
The student trustee for the high
school, who attended the board's
regular meeting Monday, Sept. 25,
told her publicly-elected
counterparts the students are eagerly
looking forward to the project's
completion.
According to a report from
business superintendent Gerry
Thuss, eight general contractors
have been "pre-qualified" for the St.
Mike's addition — which streamlines
the process of checking out the
references and reputations of
companies seeking to win the bid.
The tendering process for the
project closes Thursday, Oct. 5, but
since trustees aren't scheduled to
gather again for a regular meeting
until the end of October, it's
expected they'll either be in
attendance at the board office on
Oct. 5, or will vote electronically on
awarding the tender.
A week later, it's expected a
similar process will unfold for the
Best Start addition to Sacred Heart.
This project has stumbled into
somewhat more controversial
territory, largely because of the
confusion surrounding the funding
for Best Start. Initially based on a
Liberal-spearheaded four-year
national daycare initiative, funding
was cut after one .Sear by Stephen
Harper's Conservatives..
But Ontario pushed on, cutting
back the programming to only
kindergarten-aged' children, but
promising to flow money through
municipalities, with an emphasis on
programs which, could be run
adjacent to or within existing
schools.
In Huron and Perth Counties,
Wingham was the only major
community in which no such
program could be accommodated
using existing facilities. So Sacred
Heart was chosen as the site of a
Best Start addition, including
upgraded washrooms, instructional
space and play equipment.
But that meant it couldn't become
operational on Sept. 1, when other
Best Start programs in the district
kicked off, and it's currently being
housed in another municipally-
owned facility.
