Midget Lakers kick off season at Alliance Kickoff
The Huron Perth Lakers AAA
Major Midget team opened the
2006-2007 regular season this past
weekend, playing four games at the
Alliance Kickoff in Kitchener.
Even though the Lakers have not
had a major Midget team in several
years, they are looking to have a
very successful season.
The team got started off on the
right foot, winning three of four

They have tested their endurance
on water and in life. This past
weekend they tested their mettle on
land.
Members of the BreastStrokes
dragonboat team from Guelph, have
more in common than athleticism.
They are all survivors of breas1
cancer.
About 50 women are members of
the BreastStrokes team, which
practises at Guelph Lake and the
University of Guelph. Teams are
made up of 20 paddlers, a
steersperson and a drummer.
BreastStrokes was formed in 1998
by two members of the Guelph and
Wellington Breast Cancer Support
Group, who wished to provide
support to others living with the
disease. Dragonboat racing, and the
year-round training involved, build
upper body strength and team spirit.
Last Saturday, with motocross
riders, they participated in Motos for
Moms: Living Life After Breast
Cancer, and raised $20,000 to
support the fight against breast
cancer.
Chris Lee, of the Walton TransCan
said that the son of one of the
women is a motocross racer and it
games on the weekend. After losing
6-3 Friday night to defending league
champions, London Jr. Knights, the
team won three straight, beating
Cambridge 5-4, Windsor 7-5, and
Chatham 9-1.
This puts them in second place in
the Western Division, one point
behind London.
Friday night the Lakers faced the
London Jr. Knights for the second
was that connection that sparked the
initiative.
"A lot of the women didn't know
much about motocross. They had a
display here at the race (in August)
and even though it's a male-
dominated sport they got a very
positive response. Everyone's got a
mom, sisters," said Lee, who with
his wife Judy donated their facility
for the race.
Dragonboaters and motocross
riders share requirements, according
to chairperson Beverlie Nelson. Both
need upper body strength and
conditioning, and must adapt to the
ever-changing outdoor conditions.
The event was a relay so each team
would have a rider on the track.
Pledges could be made at the event
or can be made on-line.
In addition to raising money, the
event is also about awareness of
breast cancer survival and wellness.
"Years ago, post-operative breast
cancer victims were told not to
exercise. This team has proven
differently. This is all about
promoting physicial fitness as a
means of avoiding cancer, but also
recovering from it."
Lee is empathetic to the team and
the challenges they have faced. A
moto crash on his 50th birthday sent
him to the hospital with suspected
time in as many games after losing
an exhibition game, 4-1 the previous
Weekend. Ina penalty filled contest,
they met a similar fate losing 6-3.
Tyler Masson of Stratford scored
two goals and Andrew Van Vliet of
Brussels netted one. Assisting on
Masson's first goal was Wallace
Minor Hockey product Dorian
Temlin.
Saturday morning the team
broken ribs. "While I was there I
mentioned a problem to the doctor
and the ribs were forgotten. He
rushed me across the street to the
hospital and they discovered I had
bowel cancer."
Adding that it was quite a birthday
present, Lee said the moral of this is
that people shouldn't be fearful of
the tests. "Cancer can be easy to
have and you not know it. I got
extremely lucky."
Locals on
podium
in Montreal
Some locals earned top spots in
competitions at the recent Montreal
SX motorsport races.
In the Friday night industry Go
Kart showdown, Ethel's James
Banks, national number two ATV
took second. Brett Lee of Seaforth,
didn't let a broken ankle stop him
from taking third spot.

With five games of experience, the
Lakers Major Midgets have proved
that they dan compete for top spot in
the Alliance League. They are
currently third overall in the league
and lead the league in goals scored.
The team features six players from
last season's Minor Midget program,
including two OHL draft picks.
They have also added three players
from the Grey Bruce AAA minor
midget team and two players from
the Stratford AA Minor Midgets.
With seven players new to AAA
hockey and 16 1990 birth year
players, the Lakers Major Midgets
look to improve and develop over
the course of the season.
Coaching the team this year is
Jamie Thomas of Brussels, Jeff
Cranston of Lucknow, and Rick
Brown of Hanover. The staff brings
a lot of experience to the team
having coached at the Jr. B, Jr. C and
AAA levels in the past.
The Major Midgets are playing in
the western division with Chatham,
Elgin Middlesex, London, and
Windsor. The east includes
Brantford, Cambridge, Hamilton,
Kitchener, and Waterloo.
Their next game is Sunday, Oct. 8
in Strathroy against the Elgin
Middlesex Chiefs.
They open at home against
Chatham Saturday, Oct. 14 at 8:45
p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m.
Both gaines are at the Goderich
Maitland Recreation Centre.
All games are free admission and
the team appreciates any local fan
support. Riding for a cause
Forty teams competed at Walton's Motos for Moms race in support of the fight against breast
cancer on Saturday. The competitors were between the ages of 32 and 83. The majority were
members of the dragon boat team BreastStrokes, all of whom are breast cancer survivors.
The team has been together for eight years with some originals remaining. It is hoped that the
event, for which Chris and Judy Lee donated their track, will be an annual event. (Vicky Bremner
