O'Donnell said that on May 21 a police officer had noticed Gene.- Porter walking to his car from the beer store, adding that the accused seemed to be unsteady on his feet. When the accused drove away the officer followed him. Upon stopping him, the officer noticed an odour of alcohol on Porter's breath and saw signs of impairment. Breathalizer readings were 165 and 160 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. Defence counsel Tim Macdonald said that his 53-year-old client had been drinking, but had stopp.A sometime before the arrest. "He thought the alcohol was 'out of his system." Porter has a conviction for drunk driving from 1989. In addition to the fine, Porter -is prohibited from driving for one year. Judge R.G.E. Hunter gave him six months to pay the fine. OVER 80 A heavy foot resulted in a lot more than a speeding ticket for a man who pled guilty in the July court to driving with over 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of his blood. According to O'Donnell, Doug Johnson was stopped by an OPP officer for speeding on Sept. 11, near Whitechurch. The officer detected an odour of alcohol coming from the accused, who.admitted to having consumed two beers in the afternoon. Breathalizer readings were 120 and 110 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. Johnson has an earlier conviction for the same offence from 1996. Lambton OPP have received complaints from citizens that have been duped by a company offering huge financial gains by participating in their distribution scheme. Indications are that the persons most often defrauded are senior citizens. Seniors look at this type of business as being a great way to earn extra income from home. A company identified as Advanced Distribution Systems, has been advertising by flyers sent in the mail, offering participants up to $1,000 per week for stuffing envelopes. Here is how it works. A consumer receives the flyer in the mail offering a large income for little effort. They indicate that you can work from your home and will receive payment for each envelope you stuff. This company has used other names as well: Advanced Distributing, Mid Central Distribution, Tri County Distributing, Direct Distribution. Several police agencies are receiving complaints regarding Advanced Distribution Systems. It is believed that there are several other victims out there that have not reported the fraud to police. Although $25 seems like a small amount and not worth complaining about, consider that you are one of possibly thousands that have been duped. Contact your local police if this type of offering has scammed you. An investigation is on-going into the actions of Advanced Distribution Systems and those responsible. Participants will share, learn, and support each other as they talk about smoking and the issues they face through a quit attempt. "The focus of the group will be on issues that come up as you plan to make a quit smoking attempt," says Leslie Knight, -quit smoking counselor and group facilitator. "Members of the group will learn how to manage nicotine withdrawal and share how to find healthy coping strategies, to replace the habit of smoking," she says. This is not a group stop smoking program. There is no rule that people set a quit date or quit smoking. There is no membership requirement other than the wish to quit or to stay he has six months to pay. His licence was suspended for one year. He is prohibited from owning weapons for five years. UTTER THREAT Luke Robert of Kinlough pled guilty to uttering a threat. O'Donnell said the accused had threatened to burn down the home of the victim. Hunter suspended passing of sentence and placed Robert on 12 months probation. He also imposed a five-year weapon prohibition. MISCHIEF David Anderson was given a conditional discharge and placed on 12 months probation for mischief under $5,000. He pled guilty to the charge. Anderson was also ordered to make restitution in the amount of $260. ASSAULT A Wingham woman pled guilty to assault. Delores Bellerose was charged Nov. 30 after the victim contacted police. O'Donnell said the accused had pushed the victim and slapped her on the face. Hunter granted Bellerose a conditional discharge and placed her on 12 months probation. She is prohibited from owning weapons for smoke free. People don't have to attend every group. This group is set to meet the needs of people who smoke and want to quit. "This is an opportunity to bring together people who are thinking about quitting with people who are new non-smokers who want to share their experience, strength and hope," says Knight. Starting Sept. 25, the group will run the last Monday of every month at 6 p.m. They will meet at the health unit's office in Clinton. Each group will last no longer than two hours, and will wrap up if the discussion ends before 8 p.m. Registration is encouraged, but not required. TRESPASS Steven Hogg of Wroxeter pled guilty to trespassing at night. O'Donnell said the victim had contacted police at 11:30 p.m. on March 29 after noticing a number of people on his property. Impaired driving trend drops in Huron In 2005, Huron OPP were pleased to see an obvious decrease in the number of impaired drivers found on,. Huron County roads. From the first ofJanuary 2005 to the Dec. 31, 2005, there were 76 persons arrested and charged with drinking/driving offences. The year previous, during the same time period, there were 92 persons charged. In 2003, 98 persons were charged. The numbers are indicating that drivers are learning, said Jeff Walraven. This year's numbers so far continue the trend. In 2006, to date, there have been 46 impaired drivers arrested and charged. Even with the severe consequences imposed on offenders, they still drive impaired.
