A Wingham man was fined $1,200
in Wingham's provincial court,
Thursday, after pleading guilty to a
drunk driving charge.
Attorney for the Crown J.
O'Donnell said that on May 21 a
police officer had noticed Gene.-
Porter walking to his car from the
beer store, adding that the accused
seemed to be unsteady on his feet.
When the accused drove away the
officer followed him. Upon stopping
him, the officer noticed an odour of
alcohol on Porter's breath and saw
signs of impairment.
Breathalizer readings were 165
and 160 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of
blood.
Defence counsel Tim Macdonald
said that his 53-year-old client had
been drinking, but had stopp.A
sometime before the arrest. "He
thought the alcohol was 'out of his
system."
Porter has a conviction for drunk
driving from 1989.
In addition to the fine, Porter -is
prohibited from driving for one year.
Judge R.G.E. Hunter gave him six
months to pay the fine.
OVER 80
A heavy foot resulted in a lot more
than a speeding ticket for a man who
pled guilty in the July court to
driving with over 80 mg of alcohol
in 100 ml of his blood.
According to O'Donnell, Doug
Johnson was stopped by an OPP
officer for speeding on Sept. 11,
near Whitechurch. The officer
detected an odour of alcohol coming
from the accused, who.admitted to
having consumed two beers in the
afternoon.
Breathalizer readings were 120
and 110 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of
blood.
Johnson has an earlier conviction
for the same offence from 1996.
His attorney Glen Carey said the
32-year-old had been working that
day with his family and had
"enjoyed some alcohol", then made
a "poor decision thinking he was
okay to drive- home, which was
about five minutes away."
• Johnson was fined $1,200 which

Huron OPP are advising residents
of Huron County to he aware.
Lambton OPP have received
complaints from citizens that have
been duped by a company offering
huge financial gains by participating
in their distribution scheme.
Indications are that the persons most
often defrauded are senior citizens.
Seniors look at this type of business
as being a great way to earn extra
income from home.
A company identified as Advanced
Distribution Systems, has been
advertising by flyers sent in the mail,
offering participants up to $1,000
per week for stuffing envelopes.
Here is how it works. A consumer
receives the flyer in the mail offering
a large income for little effort. They
indicate that you can work from your
home and will receive payment for
each envelope you stuff. All the
consumer has to do is send them a
cheque or money order in the
amount of $20 for the $500 per
week income package or $25 for the
1.000 per week income package.

recent cases, it is PO Box 124,
Palmerston, ON. They indicate that
they will send you a "start up kit"
and you're in business.
Investigation shows that very few
people actually receive a "start up
kit" while others receive nothing.
The "start up kit" may only be a flyer
or a self-addressed stamped
envelope, if anything at all. This
company has used other names as
well: Advanced Distributing, Mid
Central Distribution, Tri County
Distributing, Direct Distribution.
Several police agencies are
receiving complaints regarding
Advanced Distribution Systems. It
is believed that there are several
other victims out there that have not
reported the fraud to police.
Although $25 seems like a small
amount and not worth complaining
about, consider that you are one of
possibly thousands that have been
duped.
Contact your local police if this
type of offering has scammed you.
An investigation is on-going into
the actions of Advanced Distribution
Systems and those responsible.
If you are a smoker who wants
support to quit, or an ex-smoker with
a success story about quitting, the
Huron County Health Unit invites
you to join our new, monthly stop
smoking discussion group.
Participants will share, learn, and
support each other as they talk about
smoking and the issues they face
through a quit attempt.
"The focus of the group will be on
issues that come up as you plan to
make a quit smoking attempt," says
Leslie Knight, -quit smoking
counselor and group facilitator.
"Members of the group will learn
how to manage nicotine withdrawal
and share how to find healthy coping
strategies, to replace the habit of
smoking," she says.
This is not a group stop smoking
program. There is no rule that people
set a quit date or quit smoking.
There is no membership requirement
other than the wish to quit or to stay
he has six months to pay. His licence
was suspended for one year.
HARASSMENT
Judge Hunter - -suspended,
sentencing for a Goderich man who
pled guilty to making harassing
phone calls.
O'Donnell said the accused
claimed Joseph Chadwick had made
21 phone calls, during which he
made a "number of unflattering
remarks" to the victim and text
messaged her 17 times. All of this
happened between April 11 and May
5, and was "unwanted contact," said
O'Connell.
Chadwick has convictions from
1997 and 1991.
Duty counsel Grant MacKinnon
said that it had • never been the
accused's intention to harass the
victim, but that he had lost his
'temper.
Hunter placed Chadwick on 12
months probation. He is prohibited
from owning weapons for five years.
UTTER THREAT
Luke Robert of Kinlough pled
guilty to uttering a threat.
O'Donnell said the accused had
threatened to burn down the home of
the victim.
Hunter suspended passing of
sentence and placed Robert on 12
months probation. He also imposed
a five-year weapon prohibition.
MISCHIEF
David Anderson was given a
conditional discharge and placed on
12 months probation for mischief
under $5,000. He pled guilty to the
charge.
Anderson was also ordered to
make restitution in the amount of
$260.
ASSAULT
A Wingham woman pled guilty to
assault.
Delores Bellerose was charged
Nov. 30 after the victim contacted
police. O'Donnell said the accused
had pushed the victim and slapped
her on the face.
Hunter granted Bellerose a
conditional discharge and placed her
on 12 months probation. She is
prohibited from owning weapons for
smoke free.
People don't have to attend every
group. This group is set to meet the
needs of people who smoke and
want to quit.
"This is an opportunity to bring
together people who are thinking
about quitting with people who are
new non-smokers who want to share
their experience, strength and hope,"
says Knight.
Starting Sept. 25, the group will
run the last Monday of every month
at 6 p.m. They will meet at the health
unit's office in Clinton.
Each group will last no longer
than two hours, and will wrap up if
the discussion ends before 8 p.m.
Registration is encouraged, but not
required. To register, for more

Impaired
driving
trend drops
in Huron
In 2005, Huron OPP were pleased
to see an obvious decrease in the
number of impaired drivers found on,.
Huron County roads.
From the first ofJanuary 2005 to
the Dec. 31, 2005, there were 76
persons arrested and charged with
drinking/driving offences. The year
previous, during the same time
period, there were 92 persons
charged. In 2003, 98 persons were
charged.
The numbers are indicating that
drivers are learning, said Jeff
Walraven. This year's numbers so
far continue the trend. In 2006, to
date, there have been 46 impaired
drivers arrested and charged. Even
with the severe consequences
imposed on offenders, they still
drive impaired.
