THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2006. PAGE 7.
Bill and Muriel Coultes
accompanied the Palmerston Marlin
(Team Ontario) ladies' fastball team
to Truro, N.S. last week for the
Eastern Canadian Midget A Fastball
Championships. Their
granddaughter Laura is one of the
pitchers, and her father Mark, one of
the coaches.
Other family members, family
members of the other girls, coaches
and players left Harriston on
Tuesday night and arrived
Wednesday night.
On the trip there, the bus made a
side trip to the Magnetic Hill in
Moncton, N.B.
The Matheson and Coultes family
rented a van on Thursday and took in
some sights in Halifax and Peggy's
Cove.
The first game on Thursday
evening was against the hometown
team, the North River Gators. Team
Ontario was able to pull out a win in
the bottom of the seventh and won
the game 13-12.
This set the tone for the
tournament. Friday they met up with
the team from Summerside P.E.I.
and won with a score of 14-2. Laura
pitched that game, and Brittany
Horton, from Wingham, playing
shortstop won the MVP trophy in
this game for her several home runs
and accurate throws during the
game. -
The official opening ceremony
was held at 6 p.m. on Friday, with all
teams being piped onto the North
River Ball Diamond, and all teams
and fans were welcomed to Nova
Scotia.
Saturday morning saw Team
Ontario meet up with the Equipe,
N.B. team. They won this game by a
score of 16-0.
Laura again took the mound for
the game at 3 p.m. against Rive-Sud,
Que., which they again won with a
score of 7-0. Laura received the
MVP trophy in that game.
All these wins put them in the
playoff round at 8 p.m. on Saturday,
where they met up with their
nemesis, another team from Ontario,
the Kars Aces, a team from near
Ottawa. Team Ontario came out on
top again with a 7-3 win.
Kars then had to play on Sunday at
noon against the North River Gators
to see who would play Team Ontario
for the gold medal. Kars was
successful with a 5-2 win, and were
ready to meet up with Team Ontario
for the 2 p.m. game.
This was not to be one of Team
Ontario's better games and they

couldn't put the win together but
came home with the silver medal.
Brittany again won the MVP plaque
for the best hitting average in the
play-off round. Everyone was very
proud of the team throughout the
whole tournament.
Bill and Muriel met up with
friends who also took in the games.
Friday night they were visited by
Berne and Doris McKinley, formerly
of the Clinton area, (Ruth Johnston's
niece), who also arrived on Sunday
morning to take them to the St.
James Presbyterian Church where
Doris was the guest organist.
Saturday afternoon as the ball
team arrived at the diamond, Roy
and Clara Gallway of Listowel had
arrived to cheer on the team. They
spend their summers in Nova Scotia
and knew the team was playing
through The Listowel Banner. They
stayed for the Saturday night game
and returned for the Sunday game as
well.
A tired but happy group of fans
and players arrived back in Harriston
on Monday afternoon.
Jack and Mary Taylor attended the
marriage of their granddaughter
Debbie Taylor to Joseph John on
Saturday, Aug. 26 at St.' Andrew's
United Church, Ripley. Also
attending from the Belgrave area
were Mr. and Mrs. Jim Keller, Ron
Taylor and Trudy Taylor of London.
Change of guard
Const. Steve Beasley right, who has been the Huron Crime Stoppers co-ordinator since 2002,
and Huron and Perth co-ordinator since 2005, hands the keys over to his replacement, Const.
Shawn McFalls. The decision to "cost share" between the two counties was reached about 16
months ago. It meant a centralized office in Seaforth and the use of one police co-ordinator
and one vehicle. Anyone interested in a Crime Stoppers presentation or in volunteering as a
member of the board of directors can contact McFalls at 519-527-1385. (Bonnie Gropp photo)
