Company nurtures young thespians
By Heather Dietz
Citizen staff
Another successful year has
wrapped up for this year's Blyth
Festival's Young Company
participants with the play What's
Your Nature? running from Aug. 15-
18.
Ellery Lorentz and Aislinn
Bremner both 14 and from the Blyth
area, spent their summer with the
Young Company.
The Young Company offered
professional director Andrea
Donaldson and instructor Erin
Shields, students worked together to
develop and improvise scenes, shape
stories, and create a play together.
This was Lorentz's first year at the
Young Company. "I thought it would
be a chance to get to know people
'who also share an interest in acting,"
Lorentz said.
Although Lorentz has_some previous
experience acting and directing in
plays in school, she said no previous
acting skills are required to be in the
Young Company. "We learn the basics
if you want to do plays in the future."
Bremner said she thought it sounded
cool when Eric Coates the artistic
director told her about the Young
Company.
The play What's Your Nature? came
from the students' ideas then
Donaldson created a script. They also
got to create their own characters.
When asked to rate the Young
Company experience on a scale from
one to 10, Lorentz said "definately" a
10. She said, "If you like acting and
meeting new people, why not give it a
try."
The girls were asked what their
favourite play from the Blyth Festival
was. "We both can agree that
Schoolhouse is our favourite play"
Lorentz and Bremner said.
Both have a plans on joining the
Young Company next summer.
